A very much +EV read

Verneer has a real passion for poker and I was especially excited to get my hands on this book as I have been a disciple of his CardRunners videos and blogs for some time now.

If you are serious about making money at NLHE cash games then look no further. The layout and language used in the book makes it easy to follow for amateur players and seasoned players alike. I found there to be bundles of information in this little book and the breakdown of hand histories he uses to illustrate examples of alternative lines you can take was golden. You will learn how to use the HUD stats of your opponents to your advantage by giving you breakdowns of what stats different types of players will show and how to exploit them.

I got this book as a gift and must have received one of the first few copies because I noticed Pawel even wrote a little message in my book on the first page which again shows his passion for the game and in helping players grow and develop with his personal touch.

I lent this book to a friend at work who was brand new to poker and he did say that the information in this book was a little overwhelming for him as he was learning something on pretty much every page but he had to take it really slow!

My favourite part of the book is the bankroll management section which gives you a way of indicating when you should move up or down stakes and the price of the book alone is worth it for this section. I have read countless bankroll management techniques online and in other books over my 10 years as a player and this one just seemed to make the most sense. I haven't changed the way I approach my bankroll and changing stakes since reading this.

My biggest fear was that I would not learn anything new from this offering as I consider myself a big student of the game but I really felt like I have improved after reading this and even when I recognised some techniques I felt like the way I was playing was more and more in line with the thought processes and actions of a winning player which helped me grow in confidence.

Beware: If you know what Pawel sounds like you may find yourself reading this book in his voice!

Very good microstakes book

The first thing I noticed when I got the book was that it is actually quite thin. I was a bit scared since the book is not exactly cheap. However, it turns out the thickness is not a criterion to judge this book on.

I have read some other famous poker books (Harrington, Sklansky) but none have helped me as much as this book. The book is not that thick because it does not waste time on endless introductions or explaining basic terminology. The book is filled with cold hard facts in bite-sized chapters. Verneer explains how to handle specific situations very well, and the examples are "real". Some books tend to illustrate with hypothetical situations that are unlikely or rare in real life, but the examples in this book are the difficult situations we encounter daily.

Because it does not explain all terminology I would not recommend this book for the absolute poker noob. If you do not know terms like cbet, limping, steal, odds, isolating, ... it might be better to start with another book and pick this one up later. For me, as an "advanced beginner", this was a good thing. I was able to process the chapters pretty quick, and because of their relatively small size it is inviting to reread them which makes it more easy to treat this book as study book instead of random entertainment.

As Verneer said, the book is the "full ring edition", but 95% of this applies to 6-max. As a 6-max player I can say that this is indeed true, as I applied the book to my 6-max game with success.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book for struggling microstakes players. The book instantly teaches you all things that would take years of trial and error otherwise. For me, this book deserves a place among the classics (Harrington, Sklansky, ...).

Best nlhe book

I bought Verneer's book based on his videos on Card Runners, his winnings on poker table ratings, his reputation and posts on the 2+2 forums. This is the best nlhe poker book that I have read for small stakes online poker cash games. It is perfect for anyone grinding the micros up to break even 100nl players. It is written for full ring, but ~%95 can be applied to 6max. I am sure this will also help my live game also, but I don't recommend this book for people who only play live poker. This book isn't overburdened with basic concepts, or bloated with too many advanced topics that lack depth or relevance to small stakes.

After I saw the table of contents, I thought this book might contain some fluff, or might not fulfill it's lofty goals, but every chapter is insightful and tight. There are a lot of examples, with Verneer's thought process well laid out. He backs up his assertions with math, data, graphs, and tables. There is an excellent balance between the amount of topics and the depth of analysis.

He breaks down his approach into 7 fundamentals: variance, bankroll management, developing reads, how to play a solid ABC game, tilt control, putting in the hours, and how to learn. Verneer's choice in subject matter was well made. I found the lessons on how to develop reads, use the HUD, make adjustments, review poker hands, and how to review your overall game on HEM the most helpful.

I don't have any major complaints. However, this book may not be the best for an absolute beginner who wants to buy his first poker book. This would be an excellent second book. I would also probably double Verneer's bank roll requirements. It will help you play better, when you are not worrying about the inevitable big down swings. I hope Verneer makes a sequel with more advanced theory and depth. Btw, the author is an active member on 2+2 and you can probably ask him follow up questions over there.

***update***
I still like this book. Must own. It will take more than one book to turn you into a winning player, but this book might help you plug a few leaks. It has for me. I wish the author went into more depth on how to calculate equities, developing a game plan before the flop, and more time on the actual "process" of hand reading so you can apply it to any situation. I think these topics are super important.

I also recommend The Bluepring by Slohabit, and Poker Theory NLH: Theory and Practice by Sklansky.

An excellent summary of the state-of-the art of Python for Finance

This book could not be more timely. While Python has been the lingua franca for many data science centric disciplines, quantitative finance has only recently embraced the many benefits of this language and it's rich ecosystem of high quality scientific packages. The book manages to cater to all audiences and is suited for people with a background in finance who want to pick up Python, to Pythonistas who want to get started in Finance, as well as beginners in both disciplines.

What I particularly like about this book is its strong focus on applicability. The many code examples of analyzing real world data sets equips readers with the hands-on knowledge required to start analyzing financial data themselves.

Special note should also be made of how state-of-the art the concepts are the book illustrates. Not an easy feat for any book about a topic that moves at the speed of Python.

In sum, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started with, or sharpen her skills in Python for Finance.

This is an excellent book that works both as teaching medium as well as a reference. It targets finance people with some kind of programming experience (Matlab, R, VBA, etc) in a style that is easily accessible. The topics are well rounded and include chapters: on Data Structures; Performance Computing; on Excel integration, on Web, etc.

The book also shows that Python is well suited for typically demanding analytics tasks (simulation, HPC, hardware-bound IO). This is illustrated with real world use cases such as the DX Analytics case study which illustrates how efficient and powerful (the standard) Python (stack) can be.

In addition, this book shows how the latest "trends and fads" are being "followed" using Python (PCA, Bayesian MC, Web-based apps).

This book really helps the reader take the best of Python in (Quant) Finance -- no matter what kind of institution she/he/ai works for or what kind of academic research she/he/ai is involved in.

A mish-mash of text and code

The problem with this book is that it's not really a book in a normal sense. It's text inserted between sequential lines of Python code: three or four lines of code followed by one or two lines of text, ad infinitum. You read it but you don't feel like you've learned anything at all other than... I am not sure what.

Belongs in an academic journal

The second edition of this book is poorly edited. There are many spelling mistakes throughout the book, which is inexcusable as almost all of them can be caught by computer now. Semicolons and commas are incorrectly swapped on a regular basis. For a second edition textbook, I find it to be a poor example of educational writing.

The examples given are horribly inaccurate. For example, in section 8.5.1, "ls wc | w" is given as an example of composition-based reuse. On my computer, at least, this attempts to run ls on the file wc, and then pipes the output of that to the w command. What was intended is the still-inaccurate, "ls | wc -w", which counts the number of words in a directory. The correct command would be "ls | wc -l", which counts the number of files (each is printed on a separate line by ls).

All of these things would be forgivable, however, if the main text itself were interesting. Unfortunately, it instead reads like a first edition masters' thesis, complete with academic pretentiousness, sub-sub-subsections (i.e. 8.5.2.2), useless diagrams, and references [226] to other peoples' [10] master theses [153].

Liz O’Brien serves as chair of the Communication/American Sign Language/Theater & Film Department at Phoenix College, one of the Maricopa Community Colleges. She earned a B.A. in communication from the University of Arizona in 1985 and an M.A in communication from the University of Maryland in 1989. She accepted her position on the communication faculty at Phoenix College in 1990 and continues to thrive on the interaction with her diverse, urban student population. She received her campus’ Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000, and has been honored with several NISOD awards for teaching excellence. Her creative outlets include producing and directing the Storybook Stagecoach, a Phoenix College performing troupe that brings storybooks to life on the stage for young audiences. Honest and heartfelt more than hip and hardened

Jenny Bahn is like an art kid who couldn't escape the elite pretty girl clique, but made elite pretty girl her day job while working as our secret agent on the fashionable inside. Thank goodness for the photographer who suggested that Jenny Bahn be a writer.

Her first book, "Brooklyn Love Stories" is a collection of short pieces about 20-something Brooklynites falling in and out of love. It's a different matter than her observations at jennyblovesyou, cultofugly, ladyclever -- here Bahn makes observations about things that didn't really happen, but gets the hardest part right: making an empty old man like me care about the kids in the book, kids who belong to the generation that tries not to care. Bahn writes emotion and dialogue in the sharp manner of cool kids -- like paper cuts you don't feel until they hurt like hell, and by then they've changed the subject.

"Brooklyn Love Stories" ground my heart to dust, in a good way. It's honest and heartfelt more than hip and hardened, worthy of compliments and attention.

An Exciting New Voice

I have been a regular reader of writer Jenny Bahn's excellent blog "jenny b loves you" where several of these stories first appeared, but reading them collected here all together added up to a much deeper experience. The sum was greater than the parts. The characters recurred, changed and grew. Taken together they form a portrait of a generation looking for love in a merciless city that conspires to prevent it.

A fantastic read from a very talented writer!!!

Brooklyn Love Stories was an absolute joy to read!

I've procrastinated writing this review because such an eloquent piece of writing deserves an equally articulate review and I knew I wouldn't be able to do it justice. Jenny Bahn is an incredibly gifted writer. She seamlessly weaves together humor and poignancy with an authenticity that few can achieve. You are completely invested in each character to the point that you miss them when you are finished. They creep into your subconsciousness and become real people with whom you are concerned and invested.

I am an old school reader who has resisted the kindle mostly because I can't shake my habit of folding pages with exceptionally written passages that I inspire me as a writer. When I finished Brooklyn Love Stories, I had to laugh because almost every page had been folded, sometimes two or three times, causing its density to approach phone book girth.

I could not have enjoyed this book any more! Bravo Ms. Bahn!!
