Seeds of devotion

Sister Marianne Lorraine has assembled a truly beautiful book on the twenty mysteries of the Holy Rosary. For each Hail Mary of the Rosary, Sister has given us an apposite quotation from the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to inspire a greater depth of meditation. Much like a Scriptural rosary, where each Hail Mary is preceded by a Biblical verse, the Rosary with Pope Francis's meditations is necessarily recited at a slower pace than some might be accustomed to. One can't zip through the Hail Marys like a frenetic auctioneer if one is to profit from the sage "seeds of contemplation" contained herein!

The book is small and attractive -- thoroughly annotated so we can discover the source, homily or document, of each of Pope Francis's words offered here -- and beautified immeasurably by the reproductions of artwork, mostly from the Old Masters, that we see illustrating each mystery.

An unburdensome preface gives us a recap, if we need one, of how to say the Rosary -- with the texts of all the prayers listed -- and reminds us of Pope Francis's happy comparison of the Rosary to "a special medicine ... do not forget to take it, because it is good for you!"

In brief appendices, we are given the Holy Father's prayer to Our Lady, Untier of Knots, along with a wee history of the devotion; and we are provided with two Marian prayers for more general use, also composed by Pope Francis.

A personal note: The Daughters of Saint Paul are dear to my heart for a number of reasons (a highschool classmate and former co-parishioner of mine is among their number!). Sister Marianne Lorraine has done her order proud by compiling this gem of a book! May her labours be rewarded abundantly. I, for one, am exceedingly grateful to her.

About the Author
Robert Wright earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 1966, and began teaching high school science. A few years later in 1969 he earned a Masters degree in school counseling from West Chester University and was employed as a public school counselor, first with high school students and later with middle school students. In 1974 he completed a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Educational Psychology with specializations in child & adolescent development and educational measurement from Temple University. As part of that degree he completed a clinical fellowship in rehabilitation counseling at Moss Hospital, part of the Albert Einstein Medical Center (Philadelphia). Following graduation he completed advanced studies in school psychology at Lehigh University. Professor Wright has taught counseling and supervised counseling interns and has also taught educational measurement, and educational statistics & research for graduate students in counseling. He is a member of the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, the American Psychological Association (Division 17, counseling psychology), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the American Educational Research Association. He is professionally licensed to practice in Pennsylvania. During his career Professor Wright chaired 114 doctoral dissertations, published and presented over 120 articles and paper presentations and has had four books published.

Beginner's book

Although my professor belittles the book because of its organization (which is organized by quantitative vs qualitative research measures as opposed to overall practice with application for each), the book seems to be a good guide for those wanting to learn the very basics of the research process. If you have a study in mind and want to know the process by which it may come to fruition, but have zero research experience, this could be the book for you. If you already know research basics, you might find this book too simplistic. I have already completed a thesis, thus this text is complete review for me.

A lot of variety, but hard to read

There is a lot of variety for beginning knitters, but the instructions and charts are hard to read; the type is very small and you need a magnifying glass to read the diagrams. It would have been better to print 200 stitches (leaving out the basic garter, stockinette, etc. which most knitters know)and printing instructions that are easier to read. The instructions, in most cases, are convoluted and in a couple of paterns we tried, pattern steps are missing. Experienced knitters will probably spot those quickly, but where were the proof readers? Read instructions VERY carefully, and adding two edge stitches to the pattern is not always best practice. I give this book a C; there are better ones on the market.

the book is full of mistakes

I bought this book because of the beautiful illustrations. All the samples are knitted from the same yarn in the same color. It's perfect for comparisons. I was excited to have a collection of so many stitches in one volume.

However, of the eight stiches I have tried so far, 6 of them have mistakes in the directions. The word directions did not match the charted directions. In some instances the words are correct and in others the chart is correct. In one pattern it ends the written directions saying 'repeat these four rows' when they only gave directions for three rows.

This could have been a valuable resource in my knitting library, but because of a lack of proofreading and editing, it is a book that has little use.

Love this book!!!

If you can only get one book of stitch patterns, get this one. I love to just sit and look through the book at all the beautiful patterns included. I prefer this one to other stitch guides that I own because it contains different stitch patterns than I have seen elsewhere and the clarity and beauty of the pictures. All the swatches are knitted in a natural off-white shade that shows the stitch patterns off well and just looks plain classy. The instructions are in written and chart form, though the charts are small. I, personally don't knit from charts so this is not an issue for me. I also like that the instructions for special stitches (cables, etc.) are included right in the written pattern, rather than having to flip somewhere else in the book to find out what all the abbreviations mean. Right now, I am knitting a scarf for my mom using the "Gathered Stitch" from this book, and it is turning out great. I know that there are a lot of stitch guides out there; I own more than one myself. But, if you can only get one, get this one. You won't be disappointed.
