An evocative and clear book that simplifies a complex topic

The authors write with precision and clarity. They explicate a complex topic systematically and render theoretical constructs immediately useful. Numerous clinical examples add clarity and life to the theoretical aspects of their presentation. This book is readable by practicing clinicians and by the interested non-professional. As a post-graduate lecturer and psychoanalytic supervisor, I have found this book to be an excellent introduction to Kohut's Self Psychology primarily due to the authors' ability to hold the readers interest, to make difficult concepts clear, and to stay close to Kohut's the original ideas. This book is also useful as a refesher for experienced practitioners and as a good prerequisite for more more advanced and / or specialized study.

Authors not competent in Kohut's Self Psychology.

I've read all of Kohut's work and I know that the grandiose self ,at least according to Kohut, isn't a reaction to an imperfect parent which is repeated in therapy and nor is the idealized parental imago. Both are primary structures of the nuclear self and not reactions to lack of control and disappointment as these authors sometimes claim .
I don't believe either of these authors have actually read Kohut's books,or at least if they have they haven't understood them. Instead I suspect their education in Kohut's self psychology has been mediated through the teachings of Kohutians. Kohut wasn't a great writer. His sentences are overly long and run on and difficult to read but his work should be read in the original. If not then the reader is likely to get the distorted and inaccurate view as exemplified by this book. The only accurate reliable books on Kohut that I have come across so far are Alan Siegal's 'Heinz Kohut And The Psychology Of The Self', Philip Rubovitz-Seitz's ' Kohut's Freudian Vision' and Ernest Wolf's 'Treating The Self'. The rest of the Kohutian books I have come across have been like this book written by people who aren't really competent to write them. What I find difficult to understand is the positive reviews that this book got from reliable writers like Ernest Wolf who gave it a positive forward.

Much better than the Burke's average

Intended as a companion volume to _Burke's Guide to the Royal Family,_ this product of the "new Burke's" follows the familiar indented-outline format and is very easy to use. The early history of each House is only summarized, but is complete from the sixteenth century or so. Families that are "temporarily out of business" make up the bulk of the book, including portraits of the current pretenders (up to c.1980, anyway). Much readable anecdotal material, and the Introduction has some salty comments on the observed results of replacing hereditary monarchy with "mob democracy." An excellent and trustworthy source for ready-reference.

This book is very readable. It has excellent all black & white photos, drawings, charts, diagrams & other exhibits. It presents a comprehensive survey of what you would need to consider if you become involved with this type of project. The brief section on sustainability is based on the previous USGBC vsn 2.2. Overall, Highly recommend.

Not For Beginners or Dabblers

This is a book full of professional close-up magic from a full time working Pro. The book goes beyond tricks and gets into the how and why - it is book designed for the intermediate and above skill level - there are a few tricks that require little technical skill but require some performance skill. The following couple of questions will gauge the required skill level and help you decide if this book is appropriate ( the reason is this book should not fall into the wrong hands or frustrate the reader.)

1. What is a double lift?
2. What is finger palm position?
3. What is a Hindu Shuffle?
4. Si Stebbins System?

These are basic concepts and if you have never heard of them then may I suggest the following two books(Both available on Amazon):

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic

or

Magic: The Complete Course (Book & DVD)

Both books should be in all Magicians Libraries anyway and they will give you the foundation you will need to advance to the next level and they have excellent magic.

The effect in this book range from standard Card and Coin to odd objects like a soda straw. The instructions are clear and well written. I especially like the appendix were he briefly covers required slights ( though you still need to have a basic library for more detailed explanations.)

This book was originally published and sold for around $45 - this is a steal! Dover has done it again with quality and affordability. Dover has also published other great magic books checkout:

As a note I have been doing close-up magic for over 30 years and have an extensive library This Dover publication is right up there with books costing 3 times the price. It is hard to pick my favorite effects from the book but I really like (just to name a few:)
1. Gunslinger
2. Base Ball production from card box a rework of John Bannon effect
3. The FBI Trick - will have to find my thumb cuffs - very good routine that take a stage classic and brought it to a walk around performance piece.

What I really like is that most of the effects reset or have a quick reset time.

It is rock solid and top notch. You couldn't find a better bargain anywhere. Yes, the effects take a bit of work and practice, but once mastered you have some powerful magic in your hands that will entertain and amaze people. This isn't a bunch of cheap junk from the back of some comic book. This is proven magic developed by one of the world's top close up workers. It belongs in the personal library of every close up magician, amateur or professional.

Diamond Jim IS magic!

The tricks in this book are obviously selected for their "WOW" factor for the audience. But I find that their effect amazes magicians as well - often including the performer! Diamond Jim goes to great lengths to break down each trick and explain it in easy-to-understand detail. If you're going to perform close-up magic, then "Pockets Full of Miracles" is one book you should own. Learn these tricks and everyone will think you are, indeed, a miracle-worker.

BTW: I'm a retired magician and I've known Diamond Jim professionally for his entire career. I have to say that not only is his magic a joy to watch, but his books (and esp. "Pockets Full of Miracles") take a lot of the sting out of trying to learn close-up magic.

Some have said that magic is hard (and it can be), but Diamond Jim makes it easier than any other magic writer I've read - and that includes me. Good magic requires both good material and lots of practice. You can't go wrong with any Diamond Jim product. Trust me - I'm a magician!

Books dealing with the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions were written a generation ago. They included volumes entitled Bioorganic Mechanisms, I and II by T.C. Bruice and S.J. Benkovic, published in 1965, the volume entitled Catalysis in Chemistry and Enzymology by W.P. Jencks in 1969, and the volume entitled Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms by C.T. Walsh in 1979. The Walsh book was based on the course taught by W.P. Jencks and R.H. Abeles at Brandeis University in the 1960's and 1970's. By the late 1970's, much more could be included about the structures of enzymes and the kinetics and mechanisms of enzymatic reactions themselves, and less emphasis was placed on chemical models. Walshs book was widely used in courses on enzymatic mechanisms for many years. Much has happened in the field of mechanistic enzymology in the past 15 to 20 years. Walshs book is both out-of-date and out-of-focus in todays world of enzymatic mechanisms. There is no longer a single volume or a small collection of volumes to which students can be directed to obtain a clear understanding of the state of knowledge regarding the chemicals mechanisms by which enzymes catalyze biological reactions. There is no single volume to which medicinal chemists and biotechnologists can refer on the subject of enzymatic mechanisms. Practitioners in the field have recognized a need for a new book on enzymatic mechanisms for more than ten years, and several, including Walsh, have considered undertaking to modernize Walshs book. However, these good intentions have been abandoned for one reason or another. The great size of the knowledge base in mechanistic enzymology has been a deterrent. It seems too large a subject for a single author, and it is difficult for several authors to coordinate their work to mutual satisfaction. This text by Perry A. Frey and Adrian D. Hegeman accomplishes this feat, producing the long-awaited replacement for Walshs classic text.

Disappointing

I came to this book with high expectations based on the deserved reputation of the senior author, and I hoped it would serve as a worthy replacement for Christopher Walsh's excellent book of the same name, published by W. H. Freeman in 1979 and now almost 30 years old. However, I have found it hard to raise much enthusiasm for it. It includes detailed information about the organic reaction mechanisms of many enzyme-catalysed reactions, and it will be valuable as a reference work for years to come, but the text rarely comes alive, so it is unlikely to be perceived by students assigned it as a text on reaction mechanisms as other than a hard grind.

The obvious point of comparison is with Walsh's book, but despite the years that have passed the new book does not come well out of the comparison. If we take the coenzyme pyridoxal phosphate as an example, Walsh points out early in his chapter why we should want to know about it: "the role of pyridoxal-P is to stabilize carbanion intermediates that develop during enzymatic catalysis." Similarly, before entering into detail about the mechanism of reactions that use thiamine pyrophosphate as coenzyme he describes the fundamental problem of decarboxylation in mild conditions, the need for a coenzyme that can stabilize an alpha-keto-acid by supplying an electron sink. This sort of information is not exactly missing from Frey and Hageman's book, but you have to hunt for it, something the student only half-interested in the subject is not very likely to do.

Although the new book is, of course, more up-to-date, this advantage is not as great as one might have anticipated, and a surprising proportion of the references are quite old. This is not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but it does mean that the subject is not one that has been advancing at a frenetic pace -- it would not be easy to imagine a new book on molecular biology, for example, for which about a third of the references were to work published before 1990. Of the chapter on the kinetics of enzyme-catalysed reactions (Chapter 2) perhaps the least said the better. The first half says almost nothing that was not said better by W. W. Cleland in 1963. Then follows a useful discussion of isotope effects (which is much better), and the chapter concludes with an astonishingly outdated account of enzyme regulation, again saying little that could not have been said in the 1960s. It could be argued that a book of this kind hardly needs to cover most of these topics at all, and not much would have been lost if Chapter 2 had simply been omitted, but whatever one decides to include needs to be covered properly.

On the more positive side, advantage has been taken of improvements in production techniques: the book is printed in large pages, on paper of good quality, with many illustrations, including a high proportion in two colours (or three if we count grey), and many stereo pairs. The use of colour is judicious rather than gaudy: there are none of the illustrations in full colour that make a book look flashy and modern but add little or nothing to the message being conveyed. Instead, red is used to highlight points of note, and grey is used for elements that need to be there but are not central to the message. To my mind that is exactly the right way to use colour in a serious book of this kind. Whether or not the stereo pairs are useful will depend on the reader: readers who have no difficulty in working their eye muscles to superimpose two images without losing focus will gain extra information from these pictures; others need to read the text more deeply.

In a book of this kind, with more than 800 pages, a good index is absolutely essential, but unfortunately the index is very poor. The minor criticism is that there is no author index (and authors are not included in the main index). The major criticism is that the subject index was obviously compiled by an employee of the publisher who had little idea of what the book was about. Under "pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)", for example, there is a cross-reference "see also PLP", and another cross-reference in the opposite direction, but the two lists are not the same, and each contains information that is not in the other. To take a different example, suppose you are interested in the stereochemistry of substitution at phosphorus atoms: how to find it? The index contains no entry under "stereochemistry" and nothing under "substitution" either. Skimming through two columns' worth of entries starting "phosph" you may notice entries under "phosphofructokinase", "phosphoglyerate kinase" and "phosphoglyerate mutase", but these are rather specific and you might be tempted to suppose that no general discussion is given. It is there, however, but to find it you need to look up "phosphoryl group transfer, chemistry of" and then go one page beyond the end of the range given

The Frey text attempts to 'modernize' the classic text by Walsh. In the time since Walsh's contribution, several texts have made deep impact. For example, the Silverman and Fersht books. In context, I believe Frey has put together a thorough review of mechanism in enzyme catalysis. The first chapter reads well and was my favorite. From a student's perspective (compared to Dr. Frey, we are all students) the explanations of the detailed biophysical phenomena associated with turnover are clear and insightful. Another section I felt was extremely well done covered the 'electron sink' behavior in PLP discussing the intellectual arguments present (to this day) in the field. He balances the pivotal contributions from Kirsch with tact.

A text like this does not have to cover all aspects of enzyme mechanism to be of value, but there are many areas of 'encyclopedic' delivery. My review is split: What I liked, I enjoyed tremendously - thorough, rich in information, blended well with figures etc. The limitations of the text are essentially that - as a text. I don't feel cover-to-cover this could be right text for advanced undergraduate or graduate level work. My hope is that a second edition will provide the improvement similar to the early-to-current Fersht books. Until then, the Silverman text will likely be chosen for most classroom texts.

About the Author
Jonathan Clements has worked as a translator, voice actor or dubbing director on over 70 anime, including Grey: Digital Target, Sol Bianca and Musashi: Dream of the Last Samurai. He was formerly the editor of Manga Max magazine, a contributing editor of Newtype USA, and is now a contributing editor to The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, with special responsibility for China and Japan. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, and his latest solo book is Anime: A History (British Film Institute, 2013).

Helen McCarthy was the founding editor of Anime UK magazine, editor of Manga Mania magazine, and the author of Anime! A Beginner’s Guide, the first book in the English language on the medium. She has appeared in several anime as a voice actress and produced the UK release of Beast Warriors. Her books include Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation, 500 Essential Anime You Must Own, Manga Cross-Stitch and The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga, which won the Harvey Award. She has just completed A Brief History of Manga for Ilex Press.

The first two editions are informative and really a great way to learn about a lot different anime. Including stuff not released here. Doesn't get 5 star review for couple of reasons. I never liked them not including the companies in the shows that were released here. The utter disgusting hatred for Tenchi Muyo. Go to the preview with the page for Tenchi the writer talks like its some underage incest hentai or something really bad. Just remember this book can be semi outdated really quickly with the number of shows released every year.

I will become an anime master.

I intend to use this book to become a breathing anime database. Too many anime fans just don't know enough about actual anime! I will remedy this with the essential but readable information in this book.

I recently received a physical copy and have taken a few days to see the kind of information supplied within this encyclopedia. Physically, it is huge and feels very worth the price. The hardcover binding is sturdy and seems high quality. However, it doesn't weigh too much so it is kind of interesting and easy to lug around between coffee shops.

Not only does it have information about what different anime are about, but it also includes syndication history and interesting facts about when they aired.

Very worth your money and a beautiful impressive addition to any bookshelf.
