a wild ride

The sequel to Frey was an amazing read. The characters were brilliant! My particular favorite is chevelle, our male hero. He was perfect. Mysterious, hard to reach but who seemed willing to sacrifice everything, who was willing to stick with Frey no matter the pain to himself. His sacrifice was enough to make you forgive him for his surliness and his stand-offishness.

Spoiler alert:

The only issue I had with the sequel was the aggrivation you feel for Frey because she is continually kept in the dark, mainly because when something big is revealed to her she "shuts down" and blacks out for periods of time. But, even this begins to lend to the story. At first, I couldn't help but wonder if Frey is weak and even asked myself why anyone would risk their life for a weak ruler.

But then you begin to see the brilliance in this strategy. In my opinion, Frey blacks out, not because she is weak but because she is bound. And the fact that she survives this binding without going insane (unlike her aunt) shows she is stronger than any of the other characters and no matter how frustrating it is to see her kept in the dark, it's important to the story. No one wants to overwhelm her and risk damaging the leader they know she is.

This also makes the love story incredibly strong. While reading, I kept yelling at chevelle, "why don't you tell her the truth about your past together!!!????" But then it hit me:

1. He is falling in love with this other side of Frey, the frail side.

And

2. Who wants to tell someone "hey, just so you know, you're in love with me." He wants her to discover that on her own.

In the end, this deepens their love beyond the extraordinary.

1. Because he stayed beside the new Frey and protected her

And

2. He was able to love the person she would become when she recovered her memories. How beautiful is that?

Everything she went through made her a more rounded person, eliminating prejudices and making her a better ruler, and it allowed her to fall in love twice with a man who ended up with a better woman.

I love this book. I hope this isn't the end of chevelle and frey's story. I am now invested in their lives.

Melissa Wright is an example why Indie writing, while many can be poorly written, can be an extraordinary work of art for the right kind of writer. Publishers, where are you? :)

AMAZING!!!

I absolutely loved the first book of this series, but this book just blew me away. I was not able to put the book down. I was reading all day...even when I was supposed to be working! I was hooked once again on the story of Frey and her group of friends. Her love interest, Chevelle, is such an mystery and interesting character. His love for Frey is both sweet and moving. Throughout the whole book, I was cheering for the the lovers. But there is also plenty of action and drama to intense every sort of reader.

This book will not leave you disappointed. Every thing that you wish Frey could and would do, happens! She is the heroine that I wanted her to be. She takes her life back! I hope that Frey's story continues. Melissa Wright is now one of my favorite authors. I would read anything she writes!

A reason for fainting

Okay, as much as I hated all the wilting, fainting, I found the reason for it all in this book and am truly sorry to see the end of this book. Though it may still have another sequel, this book ends with enough finality that I feel quite satisfied. I must go see what else is out there of Melissa Wright.

Many will recall that Zohar (along with Marshall, her husband) was the author of The Quantum Self (1990). Now this increasingly popular author argues that our most pressing and fundamental social problems can also be best understood by an understanding of "quantum reality." Her argument, to oversimplify just a little, is that societies in the past have been either too individualistic or too collectivistic because we have been stuck in a mechanistic (boos for Newton), either/or sort of mentality. In quantum reality (we're talking good physics now), this does not happen because everything has both particle ("I") qualities and wave ("We") qualities. Shouldn't society follow reality? Wouldn't we be better thinking that our universe is one of many (each with its own Big Bang), and that everything is directed to the high state of consciousness (Us at the Top) by the nature of quantum reality itself? For these and other extraordinary claims, Zohar offers a series of highly speculative scientific arguments from the realm of theoretical physics. As before, Zohar's knowledge of physics appears to be sophisticated, but her argument would appear weak even in an undergraduate class in philosophy (Zohar owns such a degree from MIT). In the high-spirited Up my Mother's Flagpole (1974), Zohar characterized her early life as a process of individuation and alienation. Then, after marrying, she used the metaphors of physics, which she had studied at MIT, to redefine life as relationship (The Quantum Self, 1989). Here, Zohar (Science & Culture/Oxford) and psychiatrist Marshall extend these concepts to a vision of a new vast and inclusive society. Zohar and Marshall challenge the traditional Western dualities of mind and nature, spirit and matter, self and other, by liberally interpreting quantum physics as a theory that explains the fundamental operations of nature or reality as holistic, pluralistic, and integrative. The resemblance between the structure of the universe and the structure of the mind, they claim, enables individuals to conceptualize reality as it is pictured in quantum physics. They want to extend these qualities of the universe, shared with the human mind, as described by quantum physics, to the organization of social life. With charming hand-drawn diagrams and lucid explanations of classical physics, quantum physics, neurobiology and molecular biology, Zohar and Marshall develop models, analogies, and metaphors for the even more elusive ``physics of the mind'' and the ``science of consciousness.'' Their goal is a mutually creative relationship among mind, society, nature, a ``both/and'' form of thought rather than ``either/or,'' psychologies, families, and governments based on the principles of quantum physics, peacefully evolving. However, without concrete examples to illustrate such theories, this quirky work remains abstract and speculative. Quantum Mythology

Mirroring quantum-observer dependent reality: whether this book is praised or criticized depends upon how it is observed--how it is "measured" so to speak by the mind's experiential setup. I can praise the author's efforts from a global "wave" perspective as I am in agreement with the general principles of the society she envisions for the future, but inappropriately labels "quantum." That earned one star. Most of my criticism comes from "particle" dissection. Either view reflects as much (if not more) about the observer as that which is observed, so I confess that I'm favoring the latter approach, employing a kind of Noam Chomskian critical analysis (although by no means exhaustive). My primary criticism is the fundamental premise of the book: answers to questions regarding the human and social scale phenomena can be found in microphysics, (or physics in general for that matter). The mistake leading to the mechanistic view of reality was not, as Zohar claims, using the wrong physics (classical Newtonian), but looking to physics in the first place. After science differentiated from the Medieval amalgamation of the knowledge spheres, it engulfed religion and philosophy, reducing the ultimate measure of truth to empirical verification. Physics says nothing about human nature and society. It the popular press that says so and creates mythology. Even Heisenberg confessed that quantum theory says nothing about biology or life. The domain of biology is not the domain of microphysics. My second criticism has to do with using concepts from quantum theory to "explain" phenomena outside the domain of microphysics. Such metaphors are illustrations by analogy, but they don't explain anything. Furthermore, Zohar picks and chooses among quantum concepts to support her thesis, leaving out quantum features that would annihilate her quantum society (e.g. nuclear fission and weapons of mass destruction). And the quantum contraband she freights up to the human scale is derived primarily from the non-standard, non-Copenhagen quantum theory favored by Einstein, Schrodinger, Bohm, et. al. Quantum Society is an example of borrowing and misapplying metaphors from one domain as an explanatory mechanism in another unrelated domain. Susan Langer in "Philosophy in a New Key" points out this common trend in popular culture when a word becomes a "generative idea." The word "quantum" which literally means "discontinuous" (from the Latin, how much) has acquired mythological status and is overused, misapplied, and mass-marketed. (It sells books!) The concepts Zohar uses to construct her new society (concepts I do find admirable) could just as readily (and perhaps more appropriately) be labeled "Taoist." However, the parallels between quantum theory and mysticism are not, as many suppose, indications that they are describing the same external phenomena; they are reflections of internal phenomena. Both utilize the same cognitive operational schemas to describe their "objects of cognizance." (See Ken Wilbur's Quantum Questions.) While Zohar does correctly identify "emergence" as a key to mental and social phenomena, emergence is not rooted in quantum phenomena; it occurs at all scales of organization. Calling her society "quantum" represents the very reductionistic error she argues against. Discarding the machine metaphor in favor of a "Bose-Einstein condensate" hasn't gained much holistic ground in my opinion. Quantum society literally translates into "discontinuous society":--not the holistic vision Zohar had in mind. Many of the concepts used to build quantum society have more to do with complexity theory than with quantum theory. There's nothing wrong with borrowing terms from different realms to convey a concept. Our linguistic system uses this process to continually expand our knowledge base. But the grand mistake is to literalize the metaphor into the reality of an explanation. Such is the power of myth. (An earlier similar work is Frijoff Capra's The Turning Point.)

A Good Overview, with Depth

Rabbi Leo Trepp z"1 was an accomplished rabbi and writer. He was born in Germany in 1913, and was forced to flee the country after the rise of the Nazis. He died at the age of 97 in 2010.

In his The Complete Book of Jewish Observance, Rabbi Trepp introduces readers to Judaism, with an emphasis on halakah (although not to a rigorous degree) and keen attention drawn to the cycle of the seasons and Jewish holidays. Rabbi Trepp is quick to point out that Jewish holidays are always related to certain seasons. In this, he finds "pagan" antecedents to Jewish practice. But Judaism gives such holidays an added historical dimension. So, Passover has many images of Spring and the blooming of new life. At the same time, it is about the `historical' flight of the Jews from Egypt.

This book might be hard to find, but it is worth reading. Rabbi Trepp provides a substantial overview of Judaism that adds depth and understanding for the curious reader.

About the Author
A little about Nancy...
A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there's a knight in shining armor for every woman (or man), but you won't find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is--love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone's norm.
 
She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she's the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she's married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Her other interests include tattoos, animals, classic cars and all things spooky and sexy.

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!!

In Corrigan’s world, a shifter’s wolf can prevent him or her from taking a human mate regardless of its non-shifter side’s wants, desires, or love. As this is the first book I’ve ever encountered with this twist, I spent much of the book heartbroken as Nic’s wolf actively kept him from mating with the woman he loved simply because she was human. Were this not bad enough, Nic’s attempts to distance himself from Riley often resulted in emotional wounds – to both of them. And even when his wolf finally concedes to Nic’s wishes, Corrigan insures that other events occur that kept me teary-eyed, both in happiness and sadness.

The author provides a built in history for Riley and Nic and with each piece of information that is revealed over the course of the story, I found myself wondering more than once how Nic could ever be expected to be a strong Alpha when his heart belonged to someone nature wouldn’t let him have. This is one of those cases where the memories of their time together, their breakup, and Nic’s departure were more than capable of conveying the hurt each experienced. This made Nic’s return to the pack after an attack on his father so significant and I could feel his frustration and her pain rolling off my Kindle. There were times I wanted to hate Nic for his inability to protect Riley’s heart, especially when their ending up back in bed together gave her a sense of hope in a hopeless situation, but I couldn’t because he was just as much of a victim of his nature as she was (and we find out later in the book why he couldn’t stay away). It also made Riley’s early decision to leave the pack just as understandable as her later decision to stay and fight for Nic. And it proved to be one heck of a fight.

As I expect in any shifter book, the chemistry between Nic and Riley is intense and Corrigan does an excellent job of conveying this both in and outside the bedroom. Yes, the sex was smoking hot. But in addition to the heartbreaking romance and the steamy sex, the author includes some major pack politics the likes of which I don’t see often in shifter books. But rather than the infighting I expected to see once the true extent of Nic’s father’s injuries were known, Nic had to deal with threats from an outside pack trying to take over. The level of deception and lack of integrity the opposing pack displayed ratcheted up the action and the suspense even as it served as a reminder that there’s good and bad in all species. And Corrigan does an excellent job in keeping some of the characters’ true nature hidden until the last minute, leaving the reader unsure of who Nic and Riley could and should not trust. I thoroughly enjoyed Bridged by Love and look forward to the next book in the series and spending more time with the Kagan Wolves.

Torn between following his head or his heart, Nic Kagan’s running out of time to make the right decision and either decision may break something inside him in this thrilling paranormal romance.

To protect the pack, Nic must accept his role as alpha but his wolf won’t accept a weak non-shifter as his mate but with rival threats mounting Nic realizes he can’t turn his back on Riley and the reader can’t help but get drawn into the story as duty and love tear into Riley and Nic’s heart with gut wrenching emotions flowing from every page. The red hot desire between Nic and Riley certainly isn’t in question and the sex scenes prove there is plenty of scorching passion but the relationship is causing Nic an inner struggle from hell as his wolf fights him every step of the way. These strong compelling characters capture the heart right along with grabbing the reader’s attention while the fast paced, smooth flowing plot thrills readers with suspense, excitement, passion and a darker side to the shifter instincts.

Extreme tension builds inside the pack as time runs out for Nic and Riley because he’ll have to make the right choice soon and the threats from a rival pack is knocking at the boundaries placing Riley’s life on the line adding lots of excitement and expectation while some surprising twists keeps readers guessing. Well written scenes and details paint vivid images that bring the story to life and make it easy for the reader to become immersed in the story while the intriguing events ensure that there is never a dull moment.

Once again, Nancy Corrigan has created a fascinating world with some interesting and different elements that add a whole new facet to the shifter world and while a little on the darker side is full of passion and sexy characters that ensure the reader will come back for more…I know I can’t wait to visit the Kagan wolves again.

a great new series

Corrigan’s twist on alphas & shifters in general gives this novel a fresh feel. All the intensity we’ve come to love in shifter romances is still there, yet the uniqueness of their interactions makes it really stand out. Corrigan mixes hot sex with pack relations in an intricate way that kept me coming back for more.

The battle of wills between the main characters really stood out for me. Not only was this between each other, but within themselves, and within the pack as a whole. Nic’s duty clashes with his and Riley’s desires in a very explosive manner. Corrigan develops them on multiple levels, giving you a clear look into who they are and where they’re coming from. I also appreciate how Corrigan begins to develop the supporting cast of the series here. We don’t necessarily get to know them in-depth as individuals, but their loyalties and agendas definitely become apparent. They definitely draw you deeper into the series.

This was a very intriguing and captivating start to Corrigan’s new series. It was a hot & spicy read that I thoroughly enjoyed and has left me bated for the sequel.
