Do not buy this book

This book will lead people down bad pathways, confuse them, or frustrate them. There are many problems with it and until they are addressed, I strongly recommend this book not be read. Here are the major issues I have with this book:
- A lot of technical information is incorrect. I was able to find 119 serious and minor technical errors. Some examples are "First of all, equal items should have equal hash codes. This means that you can check to determine whether two items are equal by checking their hash codes", "There are two places in memory where CLR stores items while your code executes. One is the stack; the other is the heap. The stack keeps track of what's executing in your code, and the heap keeps track of your objects...For an object on the heap, there is always a reference on the stack that points to it", "The enumerator has a MoveNext method that returns the next item in the collection", and the code on page 156 showing how WeakReferences should be used uses them incorrectly and could possibly return a null reference if the garbage collector collects the target after it is verified to have a non-null reference. Also, there are many code examples which don't compile, answers which were copied and pasted from other questions, and correct answers listed as incorrect and vice versa.
- There are many other errors are well. I was able to find 60 typos and language or formatting errors. Many of these are careless: references to code listings using the wrong listing numbers, listing descriptions being copied and pasted from other listings and then never updated, and code listings with unconventional formatting which makes it difficult to read.
- There is a lot of missing or incomplete information. There are countless examples of concepts which are mentioned and never explained, concepts never mentioned at all, and code examples which show advanced technical concepts which are never explained by the surrounding text. There is a large burden on the reader to glean information from examples and figure things out on their own.
- Much of the information is presented out of order. There is no logical progression of concepts which build off each other. Each small section is ordered in some sensible fashion, but when all sections of the book are taken together, it is a mixed bag. For example, the first section of the first chapter is about using the task parallel library to write asynchronous code, but then section three introduces boolean expressions, if statements, and loops. Also, the very last section of the book introduces arrays and collections, but they are used throughout the entire book.
- It is very difficult to verify your answers for the sample questions in the book when using the print version. There are no page numbers in either the questions sections or the answers sections pointing to the page of the associated section. I don't want to have to flip through ten pages to find the answers associated with the questions I just attempted to answer. I would like to know the exact page number where they can be found. Also, the original questions and answers are not reprinted in the answers section. All answer explanations say things like "Correct: This will work because..." If you forget the answer to which this explanation corresponds, you have to flip back and forth between the answers section and questions section. I had to flip back and forth a lot and it was frustrating.
- Since the book has a lot of information presented out of order, there are many notes in the pages telling the reader they can find out more about a concept by looking forward to a certain section. But it only lists the section name and objective number. No page number is listed and it makes it more difficult to find the page to read more about that concept.
- Some concepts are discussed multiple times and they are not always linked together. Also, some of the sections conflict with each other when discussing the same topic:
- Async/await are introduced once on page 17 and then again on page 266.
- Extension methods are introduced on page 103 and then again on page 295.
- Regular expressions are introduced on pages 163 and 186.
- XML is introduced on page 189, page 284, and page 308.
- JSON is introduced on page 189, page 289, and page 316. These sections all list different built-in or non-built-in ways to serialize JSON and they never mention the others.

To buy only as last resort

This is one of the worst programming language books I ever bought. Unfortunately there is not much choice if you need a book that covers the 70-483 test. If you don't already know the material, be prepared to read the book in front of your PC so you can research online what the author meant or missed or forgot to explain, whenever needed... which will be a lot of times.

I honestly didn't like the book, not enough depth and details. IMO, this book alone as reference won't help you pass, so you'll be better off looking elsewhere to augment your learning if you're new to C sharp. Not a beginner's book to use as reference for the exam.

If only I could return this, I would.

Great - but needs the book to be really effective

Full disclosure - I have not actually done the entire workbook. That said, I've read the book and think that the workbook does not stand up well enough on its own. For example, the first step- day 1 - is to write down all the reasons you want to lose weight and to read that list at least twice a day. In the book she explains that you not only have to read the list, but you also have to ask yourself if that particular reason is important to you. She says this will stop you from just unconsciously reading the list and make you really incorporate it into your thought process. In the workbook, she doesn't get that detailed, and skips the whole thing about asking yourself if it is important. I like the convenience of having the workbook, but get the book as well. I do however think that if you actually do follow the program and incorporate all the steps you will definitely lose weight.

Finally something that works for this obsessed food addict!

I have read every diet/compulsive eating/obsessive eating/overeating/binge eating, etc book on the market & I have tried every diet out there. Nothing works. Some things work initially but then my old demons come back & ruin all my work. I have undergone hypnosis & had counseling & taken prescriptions but nothing ever worked long term.

Well this book really teaches you how to stop those self-sabotaging thoughts, ways, actions. It really does teach you to think like a thin person does. I never understood someone that could actually throw food away or not eat dessert if it was in front of them.

It is initially a good amount of work but far less than most binge eating books,etc. But you really have to do all the steps to break free. You won't need to do them forever & this is only a 6 week program. By the end of the 6 weeks you realize which tools you really need to use forever. But isn't being thin & healthy worth it? I think so.

The book is very clear about eating disorders. If you have one this book isn't for you.

And everything I ever read said you can't lose weight or stop eating until you peel back all the layers of you messed up life or childhood & I have to say it's not true this book gives you an alternative!

For the first time in I would say 10 years I see the light at the end of the tunnel & I can actually say no to overeating.

This book basically helps any diet work great.

Great Workbook

I have been following the Beck Diet solution using the original book. The workbook is a nice addition to the book, but basically is the same information as the original text with the exception of places to write your reflections. I think I'd stick to the original book, and just reflect in a journal. I love the content of The Beck Diet Solution. It approaches weight management from a common sense 'think positive' approach, giving a series of steps to take to gain control of your eating. It's made a big difference for me.

Great Value!

The first part of this Book/CD combo has five Hendrix tracks transcribed in complete detail. The lead parts have been available in various transcriptions, but what makes this book different is the complete transcriptions of the rhythm guitar parts as well as the lead. "Hey Joe",for example, has both of the rhythm guitar tracks transcribed. The same level of detail is apparent in the four other complete songs - "Purple Haze", "All Along the Watchtower", "Red House", and "The Wind Cries Mary". For me, it is this level of rhythm guitar detail that was the selling point.

The next section "Essential Licks" are quotes from various Hendrix songs, and contains 44 licks.

"Essential Riffs", the third part of the book, is an analysis of some of the guitar sections from "Little Wing", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Manic Depression", "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", "Foxey Lady", "Machine Gun", "Who Knows", "Stone Free","Bold as Love", and "Fire".

The "Integral Techniques" section has fourteen examples which are not direct quotes. "Stylistic DNA" has nine licks that are similar to those Hendrix used - some of these are direct quotes from more Hendrix songs. The "Must Hear" section is a list of tracks from albums which the author considers essential - this is followed by a "Must See" section which lists DVDs and YouTube videos.

All of the examples/licks/songs are on the audio tracks available for download as mp3 files - nothing is missed.

Really good value, one of the best efforts by Andy Aledort, the author.

'scuse me while i look for the missing parts of the songs....

I have been a fan on Andy Aledort's Hendrix instruction books going back to his Hendrix "Signatue Licks" years ago. His production is always clean, and the guitar is bumped up enough so that you can hear the parts in the mix much better than the original recordings(of course there is no singing either). This is another high quality book, with access to online music references that can be slowed down, or change the pitch(don't feel like dropping to Eb? No problem!) If you don't have much of a music back ground, then some of the technical knowledge regarding scales might get confusing, but if you just practice the lesson, you will incorporate it into your own playing over time. And the book is packed with lessons, and th accompanying audio is great. So why 4 stars? Well, it says "5 Complete songs", and yet the 5 songs you are given have holes in them. No some of it my seem miniscule; the opening octave of purple haze for instance. It is in the tab, and it is in the "full version" of the song, but it is never included in any of the sections that break it down. No biggie right? OK....well, why is the first half of the SOLO not covered? Again, it is in the full version of the song, and you have the tab...but this is "The Ultimate Guitar Lesson" right? In his early Signature Licks CD, it is covered, I can't imagine why half of the solo was left out? This continues over the other 4 (ALMOST) complete songs. And if you are anything but the most novice guitarist, you should be able to use the tab and full track to get the rest....but you shouldn't have to. The would have been better to ditch a few "Essential riffs" and truly complete these songs. Or better yet, ditch the "essential riffs" all together, put the full song in, and put a few more songs. Jimi Hendrix has enough material that they could do easily do 2 volumes, if not 3. If you're a Hendrix fan looking to learn(or in my case, polish up) some Hendrix tunes, this is a great resource, but it is not "complete". Search for Andy Aledort and Hendrix, and you will several other books, CDs and DVDs he has done. I recommend them all.

This book has lovely pictures and a lot of great ideas. In my opinion it is probably for a more advanced decorator to execute. My only criticism is that while the written explanation of a technique was thorough, I think an extra picture would have translated the explanation with more clarity. Would I buy it again....absolutely!

Beautiful Cookies

The cookies in this book are beautiful. All of the cookies have written step-by-step instructions. However, not all of the cookies have photo step-by-step instructions. I'm not sure why some of the cookies have photo step-by-step instructions and some do not. I have been decorating cookies for about 4 years and have learned many techniques from many great cookie artists who share their knowledge through their blogs with tutorials. So, I can figure out how to decorate a cookie by looking at a great photo of a completed cookie like the cookies in this book. However, for a beginner, the photo step-by-step instructions are crucial. All in all, its a great book with a large variety of cookie decorating ideas.
