Review

“Alice James Books has been one of the major forces in American poetry for the past four decades…. This is an essential book for readers who want to understand and enjoy contemporary American poetry.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

". . . a wild stretching voice through time and knowledge. . . . Lit from Inside is an enticing pick for any literary poetry collection. . ." —The Midwest Book Review

“The history of American poetry is the history of the small press, and Alice James Books, true to its origins in the Seventies as a collective operation, is a large and very distinctive chapter in that history, well deserving of this anthology showcasing its poets and work, both experimental and traditional, that ranks among the most important of the past four decades. The next time a student poet asks me for an anthology that will teach her the art in its most exemplary and current state, this is the one I will hand her.” —B.H. Fairchild

“The founding members of Alice James Books welcomed me, in 1975, to a crew of feisty individuals committed to poetry. Unfettered by demands of market or profit, the press published—for forty years— tantalizing collections. Culture; family; feminism; friendship; history; passion; racism; war: it’s all in this anthology, a rewarding testimony to the independent spirit.” —Robin Becker

Introduction
by Maxine Kumin

Forty years old and flourishing—a remarkable record for a small nonprofit press-- Alice James Books deserves praise and admiration. Founded in 1973 by seven idealists—five women and two men, all of whom are represented herein—their stated goal, to involve the poets themselves in the publishing process, and to provide a venue for women at a time when such access to publication was extremely limited, has been handsomely fulfilled. (Men are also represented, though in small numbers.) The Press takes its name from the sister of luminaries William and Henry, whose own gifts went unremarked in her lifetime.

Alice James has remained a cooperative. It sponsors two annual book competitions: The Kinereth Gensler Award and the Beatrice Hawley Award, whose winners are named to the editorial board and take part in selecting ensuing collections. The Kundiman Prize, open to all Asian American poets with any number of published books, was inaugurated in 2010 and the AJP Translation series preceded it in 2008.

Arranged chronologically, the list of authors is remarkable for its breadth, variety, and passion. This is a big book: a reader needs fortitude to undertake its 207 pages, but anthologies are meant to be sipped, not gulped thirstily. Nevertheless, in gradual and measured swallows, I have downed the entire collection, 130-odd disparate celebratory, elegiac, lyrical, lofty, comic, surreal, imagist, formalist, postmodern bards. The assortment is idiosyncratic, the range of voices and styles embraces the familiar personal narrative voice and the innovative, often dissonant music of more experimental poets.

It has been pointed out that the poet’s vocation is in itself a declaration of independence. It has, as Stanley Kunitz once remarked, no market value. Hence, it is all but incorruptible. This anthology owes allegiance to none, other than the poets who have been selected by the cooperative board. Ed Ochester, introducing a forty-year anthology of University of Pittsburgh poets, sagely described the university and small independent presses as “the garage bands of the publishing industry.”

Now let us strike up the music. What could be more incongruent than the juxtaposition of seriocomic, irreverent, loquacious David Kirby with his long narrative line and lyrical, elliptical poet of brevity, Jane Mead? Thanks to their coincident publication dates, Kirby’s The Temple Gate Called Beautiful (2008) and Mead’s The Usable Field of the same year, they abut in the table of contents. Kirby’s title poem opens:

It says HELL IS HOT HOT HOT HOT/and NO SEX WITH MEN ALOUD/ and NO ICE WATER IN HELL/ on the hundreds of washers and dryers/ and air conditioner housings that stud/ the land around outsider artist W. C. Rice’s house...

And Mead’s “The Origin” – the title runs right into the poem:

of what happened is not in language—/ of this much I am certain./Six degrees south, six east----//and you have it: the bird/with the blue feathers, the brown bird---/same white breasts....

On to elegiac poems—isn’t all poetry elegiac au fond? All poems are rooted in the mortality we bemoan; if we were immortal we would have no need to record human feelings in poetry.
So many poems here moved me, but none more profoundly than Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno, whose poems about the murder of her daughter that gave rise to Slamming Open the Door, are masterly. The title poem opens:

In his Russian greatcoat,
slamming open the door
with an unpardonable bang,
and he has been here ever since.

and concludes:

Even as I sit here,
he stands behind me
clamping two
colossal hands on my shoulders
and bends down
and whispers to my neck:
From now on,
you write about me.

Other elegies I found notable include “Washing Beans,” by Rita Gabis; E. Miller Laino’s poem, “No Stone;” Catherine Barnett’s “The Disbelieving,” and David Williams’s “Available Light.”

And what would an anthology be without some poems about poets writing poems? Here are four:

“Lowell Reading,” by John Hildebidle; “Wait,” by Susan Snively; “To Plath, to Sexton,” by Jean Valentine, and Lee Rudolph’s “The Fireman’s Ball,” a hilarous plea for poets to pressure the public the way firefighters do as they hawk tickets to their dance: “...does anyone/ admire the poets’ long brass stanzas,/ their black, pliant, waterproof metaphors...?”

Poems about family and poems about relationships abound. In the ironically titled “Father’s Day,” Suzanne Matson describes

[o]ne father, mine, sits far away and waits to die, mumbling
old grudges to his tireless self.... he sits

pissed off and bony, a gray silt of whiskers
and wild brows and flaking skin....

But let us not dwell
on that. Let us dwell on the rhythmic ringing notes

of his hammer in the backyard thirty years ago

...And everything was green:
the big house, the little house, the backyard and our tightly
furled lives.

Miriam Goodman’s “Argument for Parting” ends “And I don’t marry./ I don’t buy land./ I get older by myself” and Tom Absher’s “The Hermit”closes with “Winter and I have a talent for emptiness--/ this is going to be a sweet exile”; these two poets suggest the rejection of earlier relationships and the acceptance of an independent hermetic life. Ellen Dore Watson’s “One of the Ones” and Frank X. Gaspar’s “One Thousand Blossoms” seem to be cries from the heart; Watson writes “I won’t forget you and you and you, each/ with a brutal truth to send away/ in a little boat, let me be one of the ones/ to keep it afloat...” Gaspar declares “You don’t want less love—this ground has been covered before--/ you want more love, even when you can’t say what it means.” In “Prairie” Robin Becker describes “[t]wo women in a field/ in the middle of our lives, / while the whole wrecked world/ slides into tomorrow./ Her hands come to my body and I would rest/ in that simplicity, this field this night....”

Poems about war deserve more space than I can allot them here. Both Doug Anderson, author of The Moon Reflected Fire and Brian Turner, of Here, Bullet, have seen combat and their poems have been wrung from it. In “Short Timer” Anderson reports “I syringed the long gash with sterile water/...the man saying Oh God and already the slur,/ the drool.../ What was in the 20cc’s of brain he lost?” Turner’s title poem arrests us with “And I dare you to finish/ what you’ve started, Because here, Bullet,/ here is where I complete the word you bring/ hissing through the air, here is where I moan/ the barrel’s cold esophagus, triggering / my tongue’s explosives...” Theodore Deppe, formerly a nurse, writes in “The Book of God” about the photo of a crucified girl, “one of several Bosnian children nailed to the doors/ of their own homes to frighten the parents away.” These poets have excoriating tales to tell; we need to listen.

Three poets—Kazim Ali, Anne Marie Macari, and Henrietta Goodman-- are represented here with poems about faith. Ali, a Muslim, writes about the Hagar and Ismael story. Macari cites Mary and Luke. Goodman states, “God as an engine seems right. Not God/ to make promises to, or in front of, /but God to grind promises up// burn them like gas.”

Two interesting poems about occupations deserve mention. Erica Funkhouser’s title poem, “Women Who Clean Fish,” opens: The women who clean fish are all named Rose...// Under plastic aprons their breasts/ foam and bubble...//they pack the bodies in, ten per box,/ their tails crisscrossed as if in sacrament.// It is the iridescent scales that stick...lighting up hours late in a dark room.”
Memorable too, is B.H. Fairchild’s “Keats,” which opens: “I knew him. He ran the lathe next to mine./ Perfectionist, a madman, even on overtime... and I remember the red hair flaming/ beneath the lamp, calipers measuring out/ the last cut, his hands flicking iron burrs/ like shooting stars through the shadows.”

One dream poem startled me. (I am sure there are others, but nothing quite so dramatic.) It is a persona poem, from Night Watches, Carole Oles’s collection about the mid-nineteenth century American woman astronomer, Maria Mitchell. Full of foreboding about her reception in academia, Mitchell dreams, “I am delivered to Harvard/ in a black carriage with curtains// The lecture hall churns// I open my mouth to begin/ and my teeth spill out/ powdery as chalk.” Dear reader, I’ve been there; possibly some of you have, too.

In addition to finding widely diverging thematic concerns, I searched for varying prosodic approaches. I needed to look no further than the first poem in the collection, “Mallard,” by Cornelia Veenendaal for the ballast of metaphor. The bird is “a pilot of the inland waters”; he uses his “brilliant paddles” during migration to “row over whole states....”

Many poets use stanza breaks to shift time or place or mood. Linnea Johnson moves from her own “crosscut handsaw” to “yours” in the second stanza, then leaps to “I am in love with you from the neck down” in the third.

And then there is the deliberate density of lines that do not invite scansion but run pellmell without punctuation, capitalizing the first letter of each line to lend the poem a formal aspect. Se...

To Sexton" by Jean Valentine is a wonderful tribute to two woman poets
By Allen Hagar
Anne Marie Macari & Carey Salerno have succeeded in anthologizing forty years of poetry publication. I have favorites. "Field Exercise" by Kinereth Gensler is a winner, with the image of picking flowers in a mine field. "To Plath, To Sexton" by Jean Valentine is a wonderful tribute to two woman poets. "The Choice" by Nancy Lagomarsino is a difficult choice, a difficult conclusion. "Equinox: The Goldfinch" by Cheryl Savageau falls in love with yellow. "Amber" by Amy Dryansky is fun. And "Aubade" by Catherine Barnett is surprising. A fine collection of work!

Walker Hale has kept to himself since his return from active duty—but the next thing he knows, he's also playing along with the wedding charade. *Starred Review* Jilly O’Hara loves her job, but working as a chef is slowly killing her. After she suddenly collapses one night in her kitchen, her doctor warns her that it’s a wake-up call. If Jilly doesn’t find a way to reduce the stress in her life, she might as well start planning her last meal. Although she’s reluctant to give up cooking, her friends Caro, Grace, and Olivia will do anything to keep her around, even if it means telling Jilly a little white lie. So Jilly is more than a bit surprised, when she arrives at the Lost Creek Resort in Wyoming, to discover that instead of attending cooking classes, she is signed up for a knitting retreat, thanks to her friends. What Jilly is also unprepared for is that her heart is going to be in even more danger after meeting Lost Creek’s resident military hero: Walker Hale. Rich with realistically complex characters and subtle wit, the latest addition to Skye’s Summer Island series is as warm and comforting as a well-knit afghan. Skye perfectly captures the feel and appeal of small-town life, and this sweetly satisfying romance is an excellent read-alikes suggestion for fans of Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove series or Robyn Carr’s Virgin River books. --John Charles

B rating....
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
Hmm, while the story overview above is accurate, it really isn't a very good descriptor of this book. Jilly is an overworked, highly motivated chef who has her own restaurant, her own food product line, and plans for several other business propositions in the works all at the same time. She's only 27 years old. The book starts with her having a heart attack. She has a defect to her heart which means EVERYTHING about her life has to change. This is NOT a girl who sits around...EVER. She's constantly going and doing something and just can't see how that can change. It's just not who she is. Her friends convince her (through some lying manipulation) to take a vacation so that she can gain a fresh perspective on how she can change her life and that's how she ends up in this little Wyoming town and guest resort.

Walker is a war hero. He and his working dog Winslow both served (active duty....and now they do freelance work) in Afghanistan where they both almost died saving a whole platoon (?) of soldiers. He moved to this little Wyoming town two years ago and is known as a loner. He likes his privacy and being alone, but he meets Jilly as they are both arriving at the airport and he feels an immediate draw to her. Even more, Winslow immediately falls in love with her...and he's not a dog who gets attached to strangers like that.

This is NOT a book about a fake wedding. In fact I was 2/3 of the way through the book before I even got an inkling of what the title was referring to. This is about two people whose lives have not exactly gone as planned finding one another. It's about a sweet little small town and resort and finding a home where you least expect it. Jilly was an orphan raised in a series of foster homes. She has three friends who have been her family, but in this small town, she actually finds someplace that feels like a home to her. Everyone from the town barista to the resort chef to the knitting divas welcome and embrace her.

This is one of those books that's just a sweet read...and not even necessarily for the romance. I loved Jilly's character and you can't help but feel for her as she's watching everything she's dreamed about and all her hard work being taken down by a bad heart. She's not a quitter, but she doesn't know how to move forward. I loved Winslow, the dog, and the way he attached to her. I loved Walker and his quiet alpha take-charge attitude. I would have liked to have delved into his character a bit more because there's a LOT to his back story. It was an entertaining book and I'm glad that I read it.

I received a complementary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Too much convenience for this to be accidental
By akb--bookworm
All the stress in successful chef Jilly O'Hara's life has finally caught up to her and she has a heart attack at the ripe age of 27. Her friends trick her into a taking a knitting retreat vacation at a mountain lodge. She falls into the small town life without meaning to and has made friends with the town recluse (and hero) Walker Hale, the resort chef, the resort owner, and the coffee shop owner. The town is convinced that Jilly and Walker are destined to be together and cook up the scheme to put on a "fake" wedding to please the aging resort owner...only the marriage will be binding until they get it annulled. But will they want to annul the accidental marriage?

I had a real hard time getting into this story. The story didn't flow; it was stilted and awkward in its pacing.

Jilly is a loner...except for her 3 close friends. Abandoned as an infant and shuffled from foster home to foster home, Jilly prefers to be alone. She is focused on cooking, her restaurant, cooking, food, cooking, and more cooking. She annoyed me. We hear OVER and OVER again about her being alone, being an orphan, her not wanting to rely on anyone, and her inability to relax as she is a high strung person. We are TOLD often, so it must be true.

Walker is a loner...except for the town who worships him for his heroism in Afghanistan and his estranged family who keeps reaching out to him. He is focused on his service dog and special ops he still coordinates with Uncle Sam. He was okay.

The romance between Jilly and Walker was just awkward and didn't really develop. All the sudden, they were just so tight.

The plot with the "fake wedding" to please the resort owner who Jilly has known for less than a week was silly and weak.

Jilly has heart problems, has had a HEART ATTACK, yet FLIES. If someone has major heart issues it isn't medically safe to fly. In fact, Jilly even states in the story that her doctor warned her from going above 8,000 feet, but it's okay to fly in an airplane?

The "major conflict" was ridiculous as they have known each other for only a few days and Jilly is furious, hurt, crying over information he didn't tell her. She acts as if he betrayed her (her words "get over this betrayal") when it was really so incredibly silly why she was mad. It was ridiculous. They act as if they had been dating for 3 years and information was withheld.

Jilly goes from happy to hurt to forgiving so quick it was highly unbelievable.

Jilly has 3 friends. It's obvious that each one is getting or has gotten her own book. I'll pass. This wasn't that great.

Light read--loved the dog :)
By Beckymmoe
While this book was enjoyable, it wasn't outstandingly memorable. For a light read, though, it did manage kept my interest for a few days, even if I did find parts of it to be a bit much. I liked both the leads, Jilly and Walker; however, I have to say that Walker's dog, Winston, was by far my favorite character. Maybe because he is just so amazingly well-behaved when compared to my dog? Not sure--still, he was fabulous.

Walker is the perfect blend of hunky, ex-military loner-ness. I found him to be a likable hero, and my biggest complaint where he is concerned is just that the town's hero-worshipfulness of him seems to be a tad bit over the top. Even when he explains it--sort of--it feels out of proportion. Jilly is a fairly standard workaholic heroine, married to her job and missing what she doesn't have but too busy to do much about it--until she collapses in her restaurant's kitchen. Like Walker's hero status, though, Jilly's illness also felt forced. It appeared to jump up and be noticed when needed for a plot point, but tucked itself neatly away when the crisis was over. As someone who lived a good chunk of my life with a person with a heart condition, it just didn't feel genuine to me.

I guess my main problem with this book is that even though it's a fairly lengthy book for the genre (close to 400 pages), just about every problem seems to get solved far too easily. Witness Jilly's near-phobia of knitting: her close friends have tried to get her to learn the craft for years, to no avail. A few lessons from new friends at the retreat, though, have her making a full-size afghan in no time. Most of the conflicts in this novel had a similar feel, and were either not terribly convincing as a real problem, were resolved far too quickly, or both. It all left me feeling vaguely unsatisfied. This was my first book by this author; so far she's on my "I'll give her another try" list.

Symmetry in Physics: Further Applications Volume 2, by James Philip Elliott, P.G. Dawber

Preface In volume 1 the fundamental role of symmetry was developed and applied to a wide range of problems in classical and quantum physics. In this volume we move on to some more difficult applications and to a more general study of the symmetric and unitary groups, particular cases of which were met in volume 1. These topics would probably only arise at postgraduate level, but would none the less be of interest to the more inquisitive undergraduate. Preface to Volume 2, Paragraph One

The Decline of The Classical Education.
By M. DeKalb
Published in 1910 and translated by JM Kennedy, this is Nietzsche's work on the decline of the `classical education' to what, in his era, represents a `formal education'. Broken down into five lectures, a sixth and seventh were intended but never completed, we encounter a philosopher and his pupil conversing and two eavesdroppers still steeped in the educational system of the current times.

The primary argument is: Schools are meant to teach `culture'. Here they are failing miserably for as Nietzsche defines culture it is: 1. The need for philosophy, 2. The instinct to art and 3. Holding Greek and Roman antiquity as Kant's `Categorical Imperative' of all culture - Hellenistic idealization.

To attain culture one must approach works of art with pious regard and studiousness. One must take on leaders and masters and relent to the sheer power of genius. Obedience is the start of all culture (he earlier states that it is the `movements of language'). However, the current educational model, the so taught `historical' model of teaching culture is debased in that it allows an `Acroamatic' approach to learning - the student is allowed to pick and choose which ideals to incorporate into himself. This method is prone to leave an individual leaderless, cultureless and thereby trawling through his life in misery.

School is not, contrary to most estimation, meant to prepare one for the universities. It is simply meant to prepare an individual for the workforce, so that he may be of benefit, financially, to the state. And the university experience is only meant for further specialization in any given workforce. It is not meant to instill culture. Nietzsche states: `men are given the culture which is compatible with their interest of gain', essentially meaning: the uncultured choose to be so.

He however finds that only a select few should be truly educated, or more precisely, that only the select few are educated are truly educated, because all the others plod through their schooling unwitting to the State's devices or it's own intended gain, or they're not invested in their own cultural gain but only their financial gains. In continuing to educate the undeserved masses we find `uniform mediocrity gets peevish praise.' (561).

Being that Nietzsche studied Philology (the study of the meaning of historical texts), it makes sense that one of the smaller bases of his argument reads: `Take your language seriously! He who does not regard this as a sacred duty does not possess even the germ of a higher culture... From your treatment of your mother tongue, we can judge how highly or how lowly you esteem art.' (497) `Culture begins, however, with the correct movement of language.' (629)

Of prime importance to the argument is the antiquarian ideals of Ancient Greece, for she `was for his culture not a supervisor, regulator and watchman' (950). And in these ideals expounded by Greece: steadfast, courageous, pure and lofty, we also see the `German Spirit' (996)

In a nutshell:
Only a few should be educated and these few should be heralded for their great work and anybody else should submit to their genius.
Our educational institutions are meant to teach you how to survive; not how to become cultured. With each sapping of the latter, man is being propelled into his own misery.

Caution on translations.
By Lost in Siberia
Apparently, there are two translations in circulation — and a third will be published by NY Review Books in November, 2015.

The oldest translation, obsolete, undesirable, is the one by J.M. Kennedy first published circa 1909. Skip it. But it is the one offered for Kindle readers and from various cheapie republishers.

Better by far is the translation by Michael W. Grenke, published in 2004 by St. Augustine Press, available only, it seems, in hardback, sometimes with the subtitle "A William of Moerbeke Translation," and 192 pages according to the publisher, ISBN 978-1-58731-601-2. The paperback which is linked with this hardback here is NOT the same translation but is the older one mentioned above.

Why did NY Review Books decide on a new translation? The new title is sexier: "Anti-Education."

Future past
By Paul H. Greinke
When Nietzsche wrote this, the struggle was for education of the masses, as a philosophic bend. What to do with the folk with no intellect, those who run on instinct alone? This may be true in 3rd world countries but throughout the world, the masses are being educated and the challenges for educators much different. Still a fairly good read for Nietzsche fans.

The greatest living poet writing in English
By wh
The greatest living poet writing in English. Of that, there is no doubt. His only real rival, Geoffrey Hill, to often lapses into mannered obscurantism. Murray's abilities with language are, at times, of a sublimity, emotional complexity, and technical accomplishment that put him in the first rank of poets of the last 125 years--in league with Yeats, Eliot, Frost, and more recently, Larkin. Larkin especially comes to mind. Murray has his same savage wit, his daring to mix the quotidian and mundane with the speculative and metaphyiscal, and his cynicism, but not, ultimately, his despair. There are "old fools" in Murray's work, but their lives have meaning and somewhere in them, a dignity. His unfashionable sacramental view of the universe, a universe that is filled with things that are not of themselves, but are charged with supernatural significance, looks decidely out-of-date. We live in a post-post modern age now, as the shape shifting deconstructions of Derrida and Foucault fade and as a kind of brutal, deterministic biologism more and more seems pervasive. Murray is a throwback, yes, but also an alternative: of how to write poetry, and maybe even of how to live.

Les Murray is not just the greatest Australian poet, he may be the greatest modern poet, period
By Bill Wolfe
As an article in the May 2016 issue of The Atlantic said, Les Murray may be the best poet in the world. That is, of course, debatable. But he is clearly one of the greats of the last 50 years and anyone who loves poetry needs to be familiar with him. Les Murray: a master of refined and unrefined intelligence -- a blend so rare that he is a star all by himself in the galaxy of his own making. Although it makes you want to know more of the Australia and the Australians -- that breed of the non-understood folks, you don't read him for him being an Australian -- far from it -- but from what he is taken from his life, his landscape and for the alchemy of turning his world into his poetry.

From the Author
Minder Rising is the second in a new science fiction-action-romance series, the Central Galactic Concordance. Minder Rising takes place after the events of Overload Flux, but you don't have to have read Overload Flux to enjoy it, though I hope you will.

A millenium from now, humans have expanded civilization to more than 500 planets in the galaxy, thanks to faster-than-light space travel, interstellar communications, and sophisticated terraforming capabilities. The Central Galactic Concordance government maintains interstellar safety and commerce with the Concordance Command military and the Citizen Protection Service elite forces. The CPS also has another important function: testing, registering, and making use of minders, humans with talents in telepathy, telepathy. and patterns.

Peace and stability have reigned for two hundred years, but underneath, trouble is brewing. Minders with mid- and high-level talents usually find their way into CPS service, whether they want to or not. Jumpers, the special forces personnel with added hardware and body reinforcements, often suffer from debilitating waster's disease once they retire from service. The CPS has deeper, darker programs and powerful reasons to keep them secret. Minders, once a misunderstood minority, are now common in the human population, and want respect and freedom. The CPS, once the savior of civilization, has been using increasingly draconian measures to maintain control. Something has to give, and it won't be pretty.

Original, fully-realized characters in spaaaaace.
By Lee K
CPS agent Lièrén Sòng is recovering from a he’s-got-lots-of-new-vat-grown-internal-organs injury, doing clerical work by day and drinking soda at night at the Quark and Quasar pub. The bartender, Imara Sesay, works two jobs to help support her and her son Derrit, and the two of them have become friends during his convalescence. After an unpleasant bar incident, Imara asks Lièrén to help her son control his minder talents before his government aptitude test, and Lièrén agrees. Meanwhile, members of Lièrén’s team are dying suspiciously. Imara and Lièrén get closer while he uncovers damning information about the local CPS testing program and his own team. Can he both stay alive and help her keep her son safe? Is there any future for a road crew chief and man subject to military deployment?

Lièrén is not a conventional hero. He’s deferential without any irony, polite and honorable. It’s so good to see East Asian males as a desirable subject. He’s running Confucian firmware on his brain, too: he respects his elders for being such, wouldn’t think to break the rules as anything but a late resort, and values his extended family greatly. He doesn’t think of himself as a good person due to the things he’s done in CPS service, but he’s principled and disciplined.

Imara isn’t a conventional heroine. She may work two jobs and be a widow supporting a kid, but she’s not downtrodden or victimized. When she’s in her element on the road or at the bar, she’s competent. When scary things happen, she’s scared, but thinks quickly to deal with it. Imara feels like a complete character, her actions feel believable. She's world-wiser than Lièrén since she's older and not the semi-sheltered agent used to living in hotels and ships, but they fit together well. Their romance is a slow burn, with both of them mindful of the obstacles to their togetherness. The rest of the story is also paced that way, starting sedately and growing progressively faster.

The secondary characters are memorable too. Derrit, Lièrén’s family, Imara’s deceased husband, the other bartender, Imara’s road crew, and the CPS officers all have their own agendas and drive the action. Some of them are good people who did harmful things, and some are morally dark gray but try to do some good deeds. Everybody’s more than plausible. Even the organizations are nuanced, there are good and bad people in the bureaucracies. No Evil Empire here. The truth is that there are lots of players in problematic organizations, most well-meaning and trying to do their best jobs, some malicious, and some who are not quite competent.

I had to read the last few chapters more than once to check whether I’d missed anything. Did Lièrén ever tell Imara what was up with his job and his team dying? He is keeping secrets from her, but I imagine she’d ask, “so what was with those people trying to mess you up?” I am curious as to how he’d answer. Because of the time lapse some developments seem a bit sudden. Maybe they could have felt a bit less so if I’d known the extent of the contact Imara and Lièrén had during their separation.

Not nearly as good as her first book!
By Barry Owens
I cannot finish this book. It is just not holding my interest at all. Carol's first book, Overload Flux, was amazing. I couldn't put it down. This book is just the opposite. I can't seem to get through more than a few pages at a time before I get bored and move on to something else. I have been working on this book for weeks, and I am only 47% through it. I hope it's just me. It is rare that I DNF a book, but I have two kindles with literally hundreds of books between them left to read. I don't have time to keep muddling through books that don't hold my attention.

The characters are well developed. I have no complaints along that front. My problem is that almost halfway through the book nothing has happened to keep me turning the pages. There is no feeling of "I have to know what happens on the next page." Maybe after I have read some of the hundreds of books I have on my Kindle I will return to it and see if I can finish it, but as of right now it is nowhere on my list of priorities.

First-class Integration of Genres
By Judith Rook
A science fiction romance novel such as Carol Van Natta’s Minder Rising: Central Galactic Concordance Book 2 has to do two things. It has to develop characters which can reveal the magnetism of inter-personal relationships and it has to invent a world-scale setting in which that magnetism can take place. More than in any other romance sub-genre, in a science fiction romance the setting takes a central place, and if there is anything which is not clear about the setting, the reader’s interest can become distracted from the developing relationship.
In this novel the Central Galactic Concordance is an interplanetary system of governance, regulating over five hundred planets and providing an impersonal power which controls the lives of all the inhabitants of those worlds. It is the third central character in the storyline, taking the role of the inimical authority, bringing into the narrative all that is threatening and destructive to affection and love.
The first flowering of attraction between the protagonists is necessarily slow because for both of the main characters other factors have become dominant. Special security agent Lièrén Sòng is attempting to survive in a social system which, he slowly realises, has betrayed him completely, and Imara Sesay struggles to protect her gifted young son, Derrit, from the predatory clutches of the same system. All three characters are “minders” that is, they all possess distinctive mental powers to a greater or lesser degree. In the case of Sòng the powers are known and are used in support of the system and in the case of the mother and son they unfold as the action progresses.
This is a recipe for success, both in the science fiction genre and equally in the romance genre, and to a very large extent Van Natta develops all the potential of her plot. She is a stylish and accomplished author who writes with confidence and authority, and develops the action at a pace which perfectly suits the storyline, except perhaps at the outset of the book. At the beginning of the first chapter the reader is introduced to a great deal of world references and nomenclature which are not clearly explained and which are sometimes confusing in their effect, as is the great amount of background detail which, while necessary, could perhaps have been spread more evenly across the opening pages.
A highly packed introduction courts the danger of not fixing the reader’s attention; however, by the end of the first chapter the action is unfolding smoothly, the conflict is becoming apparent and the reader’s interest and anticipation are engaged.
It is impossible to have a truly successful romance story without convincing characters. If an author cannot create believable figures to support the storyline then they ought not to take on the challenges of this particularly demanding genre. More than in any other genre the characters must be not only self-aware but also intensely aware of each other. Although they are individuals, the magnet of mutual attraction draws them together and the author has to be able to depict that essential aspect of a romance story with persuasive clarity.
Van Natta’s characters are very strong and quickly take on the solid yet complex identities that are needed to support not only the romance theme but also to make the reader believe completely in the world where the storyline is played out. Sòng’s growing realisation of his isolation within the system, a realisation which turns him from cooperation to opposition, is particularly well handled. Imara’s more pragmatic determination not to allow the system to overcome her life identifies her as the perfect partner to accompany Sòng into the future. Even the secondary characters are well-shaped, particularly the flamboyant and exhibitionist Rayle who carries his own line of interest through the full course of the action.
In Minder Rising Carol Van Natta has brought together two genres, giving each a similar weighting in the development of the plot. The book is not science fiction with a romantic interest nor is it a romance incidentally placed in a different world. It is a highly satisfactory and successful integration of the two, resulting in an enjoyable story very well told against a setting which is completely believable.
