Linda M. Zane: Linda M. Zane, EdD, is associate professor of early childhood education at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Prior to this position, she was assistant professor at Slippery Rock University and adjunct professor of early childhood education at Duquesne University. Dr. Zane was the director of an accredited early childhood program for ten years before venturing into the world of higher education. She holds an EdD in instructional leadership from Duquesne University.

Hot Book for a Cold War

This was a book that worried me, as there is so much to cover and so many traps that you can fall into with it (i.e. "Hey, let's do tank rush #13,123,459!). Instead, this book really turned out to be the best of the Ambush Games bunch, with a great diversity in scenarios, focus, and overall production.

There are a few new rules meant to capture the flavor of the Warsaw Pact's restrictive command structure, as well as suggestions for using rules like the NBC rules in the main rulebook. Along with this are pretty extensive Tables of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) in the back of the book, along with a listings of different support weapons, particularly stats of different AT weapons and ATGMs. The stats in the back of the book do include familiar vehicles, however they have been modified to show what is obsolete now was like when it was brand-new. So even with familiar vehicles, you are getting all-new stats.

The scenarios themselves are wonderfully varied, broken down into three rough categories, the first of which is Cold War Fears. This category shows what NATO analysts feared, a strong Russian attack. Thus, a great many of the scenarios have the Russians on the offensive, whether it be a Special Forces operation or a full-on tank assault. The second is Cold War Realities, which shows the weakness of Soviet Forces and takes in the idea of NATO mobilizing while waiting for the Russians and their own possible counterattacks. These scenarios have NATO on the offensive, with airborne operations into Poland and a few tasty missions which could have really happened, by accident or on purpose. Finally there are the Cold War Fantasies, which encompasses all the various ridiculous movie plots from missions into Russia, Russians in America, and more. This chapter probably has the most globetrotting, from the Arctic Circle to small-town Wisconsin (Which is similar to the Arctic Circle, only with more people), and the authors definitely were having fun with these.

Overall, this book is probably the best supplement Ambush Games has put out. It has the right balance of elements and scenarios, and the different outlooks on the Cold War definitely makes the book feel larger than it is. A great buy, and hopefully the next lineup of books will be just like this one.

Good Gaming Ahead

For the history fan, this book has interesting information that has been declassified and made available to the West since the fall of the USSR. Perhaps the most important one is that Warsaw Pact forces weren't nearly the juggernaut they were presented as.

For the gamer (i.e. the target audience) there are three chapters of scenarios. "Cold War Fears" deals with what NATO was afraid WWIII might be like. "Cold War Realities" has scenarios based on the newly-available information. "Cold War Fantasies" draws inspiration from movies made during the Cold War. I identified Red Dawn, Escape From New York, and A Few Good Men (which was after the Cold War, but whatever).

The material is clear and concise, as you would expect from an Osprey book, and you can jump into dicing out your firefights with little preparation.

Living in Germany durning the time in this game and being part of the military that would of faced off against the East Germans and Russians, I found this very helpful in setting war games based on this time in history .

This was not an expanded version!

I read all of these stories when they first came out:

Dragonmen Book 1: Mate Hunt
Dragonmen 2
Dragonmen 3: Mate Dance.
Then I saw that Book 1 was released as Mate Hunt: Dragon Men with the information that it was "expanded" and re-edited. I bought it to see what was expanded. There were more scenes and details. So I was OK with it.

However, when the #2 book was released as Mate Test: Dragon Men, it also said it was "expanded" and re-edited. That was an outright lie! Nothing was expanded about this book at all! I feel like I was tricked so I requested my money back. If you've never read anything in the Dragon Men series, it's OK. But for those of use looking for an expanded work, this was a ripoff.

I think that the story was good, but at the same time I would have liked it to be somewhat deeper. It certainly has the potential to be a bigger and more elaborate one.

Good but wished for more

It was a good book but very short. I didn't even really resolve one of the major issues that the main character was dealing with which was such a great disappointment. Even though he had found his mate, he still mourned for his lost lover and even towards the end was thinking about him. It would have been nice to read that he had fallen in love with his mate and that he had made peace with his lovers death but unfortunately that never came about. So all in all it was a good read but it left much to be desired.

Overview Historically, the concept of "ondelettes" or "wavelets" originated from the study of time-frequency signal analysis, wave propagation, and sampling theory. However, this new concept can be viewed as the synthesis of various ideas originating from different disciplines including mathematics (Calder6n-Zygmund operators and Littlewood-Paley theory), physics (coherent states in quantum mechanics and the renormalization group), and engineering (quadratic mirror filters, sideband coding in signal processing, and pyramidal algorithms in image processing). Wavelet analysis is an exciting new method for solving difficult problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering, with modern applications as diverse as wave propagation, data compression, image processing, pattern recognition, computer graphics, the detection of aircraft and submarines, and improvement in CAT scans and other medical image technology. Wavelets allow complex information such as music, speech, images, and patterns to be decomposed into elementary forms, called the fundamental building blocks, at different positions and scales and subsequently reconstructed with high precision.
