Matthew Wolpe and Kevin McElroy are the owners of Just Fine Design/Build, a company that produces original pieces of furniture and small structures. In 2010, they designed a chicken coop called “Chick in a Box” that went on to win an Editor’s Choice award for design at the Bay Area Maker Faire and was featured on theMake Magazineblog, theFarmhouse Modernblog, and theTreehuggerblog. Kevin lives in Oakland, CA.
Matthew Wolpe and Kevin McElroy are the owners of Just Fine Design/Build, a studio that produces original handmade furniture and small structures. In 2010, they designed a chicken coop called “Chick in a Box” that went on to win an Editor’s Choice award for design at the Bay Area Maker Faire and was featured on theMake Magazineblog, theFarmhouse Modernblog, and theTreehuggerblog. Matthew also is a Senior Mechanician for Furniture and Carpentry at the University of California Berkeley's College of Environmental Design and teaches woodworking at The Crucible, a non-profit arts school in Oakland. Both authors live in Oakland, CA - Matthew in a 120-square-foot tiny house he designed and built.

This is a lovely book - just not suited for my needs or budget.

Should be titled California Coops for Big Spenders. Even the pallet coop had an enormous list of new & expensive materials. The book is absolutely beautiful, smart, well written & photographed. We enjoyed reading it but my husband & I both agree - this book was not helpful to us at all. We have a BUDGET. I give the authors props for creativity but these designs are far too costly to be practical. The authors themselves admit to not being able to market their coops because of the high costs. The coops are all designed for the temperate Cali weather. So if you have cold winters or hot summers (hello, Georgia) all the coops in this book will require major modifications. Even as a new chicken keeper, I can see flaws in these designs where creativity seems to be the focus instead of practicality. Oh, well, it will make a good coffee table book. Good for conversation....only.

Bringing chicken coops into the modern garden

Fantastic re-imagining of the utility of chicken coops, moving from simply functional objects to something that sits well in an urban setting. I've taken several ideas from across the coop plans displayed and explained in this text to create a one-off coop that blends well with the other objects in our garden.
Kevin and Matthew have a laidback, informal style of writing which, when coupled with the beautiful honesty of Erin's photography, lends itself to a throughly readable text. The step-by-step guides have a good balance of information and imagery, allowing the reader to both visualise the end product and adapt each plan to suit a particular setting or need.
The stand-out design for me was the 'Chick In a Box', with its gorgeous butterfly wing roof and water catchment. The elegant lines and tall form would be ideal for a garden/ space that celebrates the objects within.
Another worth mentioning is the 'The Standard', with its nod to simplicity and function, use of modern materials. The easy-care access and lack of frills would see this as an ideal option for first time, small flock, owner.
My final design utilised aspects of the above two, enclosed in the 'Corner Coop', to keep our girls safe from neighbours cats and the odd sparrow or waxeye (we are in the lower North Island of New Zealand).

Outstanding book with very detailed instructions

I love this book--the coops are works of art. I really wish that I could build a coop like the one pictured on the cover but the open roof (I just realized it might have an inner roof or could be adapted) because it's both really clever and perfectly functional. Sadly, it would be nicer than my tiny house! I covet nearly all the designs and might build the pallet one down the road. (This is my first year for chickens.) I think because the designers live in California, most of the coops are made for warmer climates. I need insulation so I'll be going with the standard coop which also has nice lines. The book gives a lot of information on intermediate woodworking techniques which is helpful for more than just learning to build a coop. All of the designs come with complete building material lists and clear instructions and drawings. I bought the Kindle version because I thought it would suffice and I was trying to be tricky and use up every last dime of a gift card, but I wish that I had the print version. It will be easy enough to just print out the pages I need for working but do consider the hard copy; it's very handsome. I've been shopping for awhile for just the right book, and as far as I'm concerned, this is it.
