Its basic recipes and techniques worked well for me

I bought this book just over six months ago, and we have been having "Sushi Saturday's" ever since. The step-by-step recipe for the seasoned rice (the foundation for sushi) is excellent. The book also has great basic recipes like seasoned shitake (teriaki)and homemade pickled ginger. The techniques for rolling, and creating nigiri were especialy helpful for getting started. Granted, my first try was not great. I still find preparing sushi to be very difficult- but through no fault of this book. However, we have now had several very successful sushi-dinners with friends. I credit this book with getting me started on all the basics.

Some basic ideas for making sushi

Hopefully you've take a sushi making class before trying to make sushi at home. This book has some good basics such as how to make seasoned sushi rice, explaining condiments & garnishes to use and simple recipes, some equipment & utensil suggestions, glossary of terms. There were some creative ideas for both vegetarian & meat eaters like "molded ham sushi" & "Sushi wrapped with pickled vegetable leaf." Additional soup & salad recipes to eat with your sushi were helpful. Although not the best sushi cookbook I've seen it's worth buying a used copy & adding to your cookbook collection.

Not great, not half bad

The photography in the book is excellent. Lots of pictures of nicely prepared sushi. The pictures alone offer great ideas. It is divided into well defined sections that do make sense. However, the information provided in the book is not as simple and didactical as you might expect from the title. It almost seems as if the information was pieced together from different sources and nobody took the time to proofread it. It's not impossible to understand as stated before. Beginners will benefit from this book, but maybe it shouldn't be your sole source for sushi info.

Not just for the academic

I can't believe this book isn't recommended by more screenwriting classes or playwriting classes, though I'm sure the academic language would intimidate a lot of people from reading it and the subject matter seems like specialized information, I learned a lot about creating a good story on any level. As scary as the language might seem at first, if you read carefully it offers very precise information on how the human brain structures plot, and how the Greek dramatists utilized these methods. This isn't just for people studying about the Orestia or Oedipus. In the first part of the book the author uses examples of "western" plotmaking from Monty Python to Casablanca. He delves into different theories of looking at how people interpret narrative and settles on a viewpoint that really clarifies how plot works in the human mind.

In the second part the author takes all this information to the examination of ancient narratives as an example of how the elements of plot structure we take for granted originated with Greek plays and stories. It's not an exciting read, per se, but coming from an aspiring writer's perspective I really felt like the author dissected storytelling to a microscopic level, and that was exciting for me.

Best guide to Austin!

This book is an absolute must for anyone visiting Austin or for those who frequently host Austin visitors! As an Austin resident for the last 10 years, this book will be my go to when recommending activities to friends and family. Like the book mentioned, I myself have gotten into a rut doing and recommending the same activities and now I can have visitors flip through the book for some fresh, fun ideas. I've followed the blog since it's inception and am so glad the book captured the best of the best and put it in print. Can't wait to see what the blog will bring in the years to come!

Absolute must-have!

This is an absolute must-have for anyone either visiting or living in Austin! I have lived in Austin for nearly 7 years, and was shocked by the amount of things in this book I have not done. It is a great coffee table book, and an awesome gift for a friend just moving to Austin. I recently bought one for a co-worker that just moved to town, and she has been going through it week by week and checking off all of the amazing things this book has to tell you about! I love that no matter what mood I am in, I know I can open the book and find something perfect for the day. I am a huge foodie, and love that it has so many places I have not been, including secret menus!!!! This book is an obvious must-have, and if you aren't following the 365thingsaustin.com website, that should most definitely be your next step in immersing yourself in the amazing Austin culture.

like eating goodies from food trucks

I lived in Austin in the late 70s and early 80s and still visit When I can. According to Kristy Owen, I'm about half ready to die. Some of the "must do" activities are long-time traditions, and some, like eating goodies from food trucks, are new. I would add a few, including viewing the Guttenberg Bible at the Harry Ransom Museum. I would also list fewer dining experiences, as restaurants change in quality or close down all together. However, the book offers a good starting list of the many adventures Austin offers.

Some think that a just society for Rawls cannot promote a better social world unless it is acceptable to all but, this wrongly treats Rawls as a supporter of minimal government. Setting this aside, the book argues that the ideas of justice behind political and media pundit support of neo-liberal capitalism are faulty, and should be replaced with a Rawlsian idea of justice. Resistance to the idea that an acceptable theory of justice can say that capitalism is unjust is overcome by showing that capitalism, as Marx sees it, must be unjust on Rawls’s theory of justice because it breaches the difference principle and involves exploitation of employees. Reasons are then given for a new society that will be just under a modified Rawlsian idea of justice and will promote the Marxian good of free social cooperation on projects pursued independently of demands of nature. What a free life lived in this new society means is spelled out and shown to be acceptable. This book concludes by asking whether society can set out on a path to a better social world.

Ian Hunt’s Liberal Socialism is both a powerful contribution to the critique of hegemonic modes of justification for neoliberal capitalism, and an important attempt to synthesise elements from Marx and Rawls into an alternative to this unjust social ideal. While I don’t share all of Hunt’s political conclusions, his book deserves to be taken seriously by all those concerned with challenging the injustices characteristic of the modern world. Sums it up

Some readers may find this book difficult. Barthes never attempts to give us a uniform narrative about love. Instead, as the title implies, he provides us with fragments--some of which come from literature and some from his own philisophical musings--of a lover's point of view. Since childhood, we are taught to think of love as a singualar entity. Whether it is God's love, marriage, passion, or patriotism, we are taught to think of love as a unique, and exclusive prize. But as Barthes' points out, love is built upon fragments, many of which are mundane.
The most compelling part of "Lover's Discourse" is Barthe's dissection of the phrase, "I love you". Drawing upon literary examples and common sense, Barthes asks us what we mean when we state that we love someone. Do we love what they do for us? Do we love how they make us feel? Do we love the idea of them? Are we in love with love itself? This concept is born out by the protagonist Merseault, in Camus' novel, "A Happy Death". The first thing Merseault says to his lover when she wakes up in the morning is, "hello image".
"Lover's Discourse" extracts love from ideology and examines it under a microscope. We may be confused by what we see, and we may not like it, but the view contains more than a glimmer of reality.
