T.S. you really know how to write a meaningful story. I truly enjoyed this book very much.

Yes it's short but honestly it doesn't take away from it. Funny thing is I use to read solely wolf stories but ever since I started reading this authors books I've changed my mind.

This is a heartfelt story about Colin and his scars and being accepted.
So much emotion involved with a bear that cares

Please don't quit writing about the bears.

I loved this little Valentine from TS Joyce. It is a perfect addition to her Bear Valley series, picking up a few years after the war with the Long Claw Clan. Joyce became one of my favorite authors with the Wolf brides series. From there her position solidified with her bear series. She packs alot into this short story and her longer books are even better.

Colin Cross is known around town as a mountain man, a loner who comes into town a couple of times a week to mail small boxes. He's at the diner when he overhears a conversation that catches his interest. Hadley Bennett, the local florist, has been signed up on an online dating site as flowerlady26 by her friend. A few days later she is contacted online by bearman28 and a friendship begins to develop. But while Hadley's friend thinks he could be a serial killer, Colin' s friends are encouraging him to make actual contact. Colin just isn't sure Hadley is ready for the real bearman, or his secrets.

Wow! What a wonderfully sweet and endearing Valentine's Day love story! Joyce has once again delivered a captivating, endearing, heartwarming, arousing and romantic story to her readers. I have been a fan since I read The Witness and the Bear, the very first book in her Bear Valley Shifters franchise. I have read them all and loved them all! An awesome read and wonderfully entertaining!

Best memoir I've ever read. Tension of spy novel, but narrative observation of 19-year-old girl in perils of post-WW2 Hungary.

Late-in-life Anna Koczak has done a terrific job recreating the world she saw in 1947-49 Hungary, the situations she encountered, and the way she (the very young woman) reacted to them (mercurial ups and downs, petulant outbursts, sullen silences, delightful mental flights from grim reality, great hopes and great fears). The postscript -- a reunion 50 years later with her old nemesis from the communist secret police -- is a wonderful confirmation that love indeed had triumphed over incredible evil. Clearly Anna's guardian angel had been working overtime during that dark period of the brutal repression of the Hungarian people. Most Americans today know little of that history, but many who grew up in the Catholic school system here in the 1950's and -60's recall the imprisonment and torture of Hungary's Cardinal Archbishop Mindszenty. They prayed for him daily for many years.

Her vivid memories paint unforgettable descriptions of significant events both personal and historic . Her story makes an absolutely unforgettable read!

Good light summer read

You can tell from the title and cover that this book does not take itself too seriously. Levy here has done a good job assembling a fun, light summer read. It's a big book, colorful with a lot of nice pictures, and its cheap! List is $14.95, but it can be had for around $10.

Nearly all of the 26 topics chosen are important, and at one time or another most of these disputes got a lot of press, so much of this material will be familiar to technical people, still I think almost everyone will find some interesting new material here. For example I knew nothing about the disputes Freud had had with Jung and Adler in the early 1900's, the subject of two of the articles. I was unaware that Montagnier and Gallo, who I remember battled over credit for discovering the HIV retrovirus, are now friends, but only Montagnier was included in the Nobel prize. Or polio vacine guys, Sabin and Salk, do you remember which used the killed virus and which the weakened? Levy has read up on these 26 cases and generally does a good job giving a pithy and even handed summary of the dispute in a few pages, and when helpful he includes a timeline.

The disputes are grouped into four categories:
1) Earth Sciences
2) Evolution and Palaeobiology
3) Biology and Medicine
4) Physics, Astronomy and Math

Most articles start with unlabeled picture/portrait of the disputants. I finally figured that a dispute titled A vs B has A's picture left and B's right. But sometimes there is still portrait uncertainty. For example the article on who invented fingerprints for criminal identification is titled Faulds vs Galston and Herschel. There are two portraits. The left I presume is Faulds, but who is the man on the right, Galston or Herschel?

I think this book should be three stars, but as the only other reviewer gave it two stars I am giving it four to raise the average to three.

Thought-provoking look at the human element in scientific controversies

The ideal of dispassionate objectivity in scientific research exists in tension with the reality that scientific research is conducted by fallible human beings who exhibit a wide range of different personalities, emotions, and personal interests. This book provides a thought-provoking look at how the personalties, emotions, and personal interests of scientific researchers can threaten the ideal of dispassionate scientific research. The author discusses 26 disputes in the history of science to show how the ideal of dispassionate objectivity occasionally has been forgotten, ignored, or blatantly abandoned by some researchers determined to promote their theories, attack opposing theories, seek personal fame, or vilify opponents.

The book is too brief and episodic to provide a thorough or scholarly history of contentious scientific disputes. Furthermore, the author occasionally lapses into bare speculation and undocumented surmise about the motives and thought processes of some of the disputants he discusses. However, the book does provide an interesting perspective on the history of science.

Readers interested in other books about how personalities, emotions, and personal interests can affect the history of medicine, mathematics, and technology might consider also taking a look at Dana Mackenzie, The Universe in Zero Words: The Story of Mathematics as Told through Equations; F. Gonzalez-Crussi, A Short History of Medicine (Modern Library Chronicles); and Robert V. Bruce, Lincoln and the Tools of War. And, readers interested in how rhetoric and argumentation have played a role in the history of science might consider also taking a look at Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Figures in Science.

Scientific feuds - good value

Review of `Scientific feuds from Galileo to the human genome project' by Joel Levy in 2010 published by New Holland Publishers of London.

"Scientific feuds from Galileo to the human genome project" is what might be called a coffee table book. Looking at the pricing is instructive as paperback editions are more expensive than the hardback edition, said to be available at $2.02 new or used. It is the hardback edition that is being reviewed here. I have some criticisms of the book, but it is certainly good value at this price. The book is 224 pages long, nicely printed, with twenty-six feuds and eight features considered in very short attractively illustrated articles. A feature is used here to mean a generalized theme, such as `fraud in science' and `science and politics', which add to the books general usefulness. My dictionary defines a feud as `lasting mutual hostility' and the feuds chosen all seem to fit this definition.

Most articles contain a diagrammatic timeline summarizing the times when various events took place and these are useful. The criticism must be the lack of depth, but there is a broad sweep of science covered worldwide from the fourteenth century to the present day. The purpose of the book is to interest a wider audience than just those already interested in science's fascinating history. I enjoyed the rival publication is "Great Feuds in Science" by Hal Hellman subtitled, "Ten of the liveliest disputes ever" (already reviewed by this reviewer), where article length averaged twenty pages, but this too was criticized by others as being insufficiently detailed. For those of us who want more depth about a particular dispute, perhaps about Newton, with three of his feuds given some prominence in this book, there are numerous options such as "Never at Rest: A Biography of Isaac Newton" by Richard S. Westfall, "Isaac Newton" by James Gleick, or "Isaac Newton" by Gale E. Christianson amongst many alternatives.

The hope and purpose of books like "Scientific feuds" is that it will interest some readers sufficiently to become motivated enough to tackle some of the deeper `history of science' literature. For value and presentation, this book is recommended.

Surprising lessons on having self-respect in relationships!

Considering how many men want submissive little mail-order brides from developing countries, or large silicon breasted blondes, or mindless ninnies, or whatever, I cannot get too upset about somebody wanting to marry a wealthy person. Having said that, I must admit this book surprised me because it teaches readers a lot about setting high standards in intimate personal relationships. Anyone (male or female) who feels they have ever allowed themselves to be treated less well than they deserve, or who feels they need to raise expectations regarding what is acceptable behavior from their partner, should benefit from this author's lessons in practical psychology. And if you find that you also want to marry rich, GO FOR IT. In any case, it seems a more honourable way to gain wealth than through the sort of vile and back-stabbing political behavior one often sees in the corporate world.

A real eye-opener!!

In the summer of 2001, I had just been made redundant from a top-flight job that I enjoyed very much in the city of London. In a mood of some despondency I attended Mrs Sayles' lecture the day I collected my final pay-check. Her enthusiasm and sheer good common-sense were wonderful to behold. At the end of it, I emerged positively glowing and convinced that I would succeed and, a few days later, secured another job working in one of the top theatre companies in the world. Apparently, at my interview, the interviewees decided instantly I was "the one" - despite a list of over 150 applicants!! I'm convinced that Mrs Sayles' words helped give me the confidence I was somewhat lacking at the time. Since then, I have purchased this book and find it every bit as inspirational as her lecture, although sadly lacking the magnetism of her actual presence (hence my award of only four stars for the book)! I find, much to my amazement, that I've been following a lot of her suggestions for many years, which probably explains why I often secure jobs which put me in touch with wealthy people and allow me to enjoy a lot of the perks of great wealth. Some of it is, at first read, a bit shocking - it's a bit of a quantum leap to come to terms with her rather hard-headed stance on relationships. However, such an approach is ideal for the business world and for any area of life where one wants to succeed.
I get very irritated with those who see her as nothing more than a gold-digger. I've known too many, usually highly-intelligent, women get involved with absolute losers who have treated them like door-mats and worse! Once the marriage or relationship is over (and it always is, eventually), there is often years of misery fighting over money, especially where children are involved. At least Mrs Sayles suggests to women that they ought to pay attention to getting what they are worth from a relationship, instead of letting their hearts rule their heads. Also, hard though it may be to take, very few people want "the true you". What they want is their vision of "the true you", and Ginie shows one how to package and market that vision - she doesn't suggest that one should believe one's own publicity and become something other than what one truly is. At the end of the day, one has a choice - one can lead one's life bemoaning the fact that one never quite gets the man, the job or the lifestyle of one's dreams, or buy Ginie Sayles' book, follow her advise and go out there and get one's dream!!

BEST BOOK I EVER READ

The book actually changed my self-perception. It was referred to me by a psychiatrist who said the book was good Cognitive psychology for a positive relationship with myself and money and relationships. The message I got from Ginie Sayles in this book is that whether or not I decide to marry somebody with money is not the only point - one point is that if I meet somebody with money, I will feel equal - and now that I have read the book and put it into practice, I finally do feel equal. I really needed this.
