Modern philosophy at its best

In this book, one of the world's most important and under-recognized philosophers addresses what is arguably the major cultural question of our times: Can the humanistic and even religious view of human nature be reconciled with science?
Flanagan is a witty, entertaining writer, who eschews the jargon and abstractions that deaden the prose of the vast majority of academic philosophers. And unlike philosophers such as Daniel Dennett, Flanagan is less intent on demonstrating his cleverness than on presenting his thoughts as clearly as possible. Although he is steeped in knowledge-from Aristotle to the latest findings of cognitive science-Flanagan wears his learning lightly. His writings are rigorous enough for professionals-philosophers and scientists paid to ponder the mind-body problem and other enigmas-while remaining accessible for lay readers. And shouldn't philosophy be for everyone?
Flanagan is basically a scientific materialist, who believes that the mind is a function of the brain and cannot exist independently of it. In The Problem of the Soul, he dismisses such supernatural concepts as God, the immortal soul, life after death, and even free will, defined as freedom from physical causality. But he argues convincingly that if we jettison a supernatural outlook, we are left not with an anything-goes nihilism but with an even more secure foundation for morality.
Flanagan deftly draws upon his personal experience to explore certain questions-for example, what concept of a self makes sense, given all the changes we pass through in life? He reveals his family's history of alcoholism, his decision to stop drinking, his recent interest in Buddhism. In the hands of a lesser writer, this approach would seem self-indulgent, but Flanagan makes it poignant and compelling. There is a warmth suffusing his prose that counteracts the chill of his ideas, and even lends them a kind of tacit support: ultimately, it is simple human decency that will save us (if we can be saved) and not faith in some supernatural metaphysics.
A book like this is bound to provoke-indeed invites-objections, and I have a couple. One is that the free will Flanagan attacks-a dualistic version that assumes absolute freedom from physical causality--is something of a straw man. I believe that science undermines any meaningful concept of human choice, including the one that Flanagan articulates.
I also see a potential weakness in Flanagan's concept of an "ethical ecology." He suggests that, just as ecologists seek to understand the factors that contribute to a healthy ecosystem, so should our ethics aim at delineating conditions conducive to our "flourishing." The tenets of ecology-for example, the notion that diversity of species leads to ecological stability-are contentious, to say the least, and hence might not provide the kind of the secure foundation for human ethics that Flanagan envisions. But of course Flanagan wrote this book not to give us answers but to incite further reflection and dialogue. He succeeds splendidly. We need philosophers like him.

"Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?" Dare I Not?

I was going to grad school in philosophy before I read this book--I think--but I was worried about whether or not I would ever get to work on the things that really matter. I'm not worried anymore. Although I am wondering if I'll have to do all the other work Flanagan has done before I get the nerve to publish anything. Cognitive neuroscience, psychology, literature (with minor side interests in sociology and religion)--it's a wonder that I can understand anything the man says. But I found this book to be one of the clearest, most enjoyable things I ever read.
The Problem of the Soul is an amazing synthesis in which ethics meets the scientifically savvy 21st century--it's the book Nietzsche would have written if he had been interested in being understood. No other single text has had such an impact on the way I think, and I am in awe of the man who can build so much of the argument from scratch while getting so much right. Flanagan does indeed have the hands of a surgeon: there's no flinching here, and it's a light touch the whole way through. Whatever pain might be involved in the excision is masked by this surgeon's crooked grin; good humor is a great palliative.
This book is for people who want to enjoy reading something that will challenge how they think. It's an amazing primer for academic philosophy (frightening how much I learned without even realizing it--I can't tell you how much I wish I'd read it before I took all those stupid courses), and it reads like a novel. I can honestly say that I've never before had the experience of having to make myself put down a philosophy text in order to get some work done. It was a beautiful thing.
Written for a general audience, The Problem of the Soul comes across as a late-night conversation with a really exciting person you just met at the local pub or coffeehouse. It's written with style and personality, and you truly feel as if you get to know this guy. Which turns out to be a good thing--he's a really great person.
I don't want to give the impression that I'm all for everything that Flanagan says. Actually, I'm the president of the group responsible for promoting interfaith dialogue on campus at Duke University, and I have something of a vested interest in refuting many of his arguments about matters of faith. I wish I could. I do believe there are some valid responses to most of the things he says, but I also believe that all those responses involve some serious re-evaluations. One thing I'm certain of is that all religious people have an undeniable obligation to read this book (to themselves, to their faiths). I applaud Flanagan for the effort he puts into opening up a genuine dialogue: he shows extreme sensitivity in treating people of faith as fellow creatures worthy of dignity and respect (even as he challenges the very beliefs that are generally thought to provide the foundation for that faith).
Reading this book refreshed my vision and rekindled my passion for philosophy. If I had to recommend just one philosophy book for each and every person to read, this would be it. Do yourself a favor and buy it. For those with slightly more specialized interests, you might want to check out Flanagan's other works. Varieties of Moral Personality and Dreaming Souls have become my new favorites; I'm going after the philosophy of mind stuff next. But none of them beats The Problem of the Soul, so make sure you get that one first.

I am disappointed.

Finished this book today. This is an ok introduction, but after reading it carefully I don't feel that I am prepared to use the library effectively and I need to seek out other resources just to get started. It taught me enough to have some idea what I need to (but don't yet) know to be productive with jQuery.

The book is only 151 pages and the intro chapter starts at 11. Real jQuery discussion doesn't actually start until 49, and there are numerous pages that are half empty, a few are totally empty. Add to that the VERY LARGE font that could have been typeset with a crayon. The content is just sparse.

An example of a deficiency that really bothers me is a table of 18 jQuery custom selectors in chapter 5. Nowhere is it mentioned that the table provides only a partial list; I understood only that I was reading a list of the available selectors. But right after the table, is a set of 8 examples (generally a positive feature of the book). The second example shows use of a selector that is not listed in the table, which of course leads me to immediately question what else is missing. I now wonder how vast is the set of things that the book omits. Fortunately there are ways to investigate this online, but of course that is not why one buys a book (at least not me).

Further there are enough editorial errors (extra or missing words) to distract, as well as a few code problems that can lead the reader astray. Maybe the code has been fixed in the online distribution, I have not yet checked. Being familiar with javascript helped me to recover from confusion in a couple of places, but the intended audience here appears to be the novice, and I feel sorry for those who study this carefully with the aim or learning from scratch.

I did get an orientation and learn some useful things with this, which is why I am not rating one star. But if I am going to pay money for a book, it needs to better fulfill its purpose. Sorry, but this did not meet my expectations, no joy here.

No kidding, it actually is a joy to learn jQuery this way.

Alan Forbes has been programming for twenty years, so you'd think by now he'd have learned to write dry, unapproachable prose that makes you decide to hire a programmer instead of learning to do it yourself. But he's one of those rare experts who know how to get the subject across to those who have no expertise at all, and he does it in a way that makes you want to keep reading. The book is as close to being a page-turner as you're likely to find in the programming category.

This should be your first jQuery book, but you won't fully appreciate what Forbes has done here unless you've tried some of the other books on the subject, as I have. The writing is Simon-simple. The definitions and explanations are clear. The book is packed with examples and illustrations. Most important, Forbes always puts things in context. He doesn't just tell you how to do something. He tells you why you'd want to do it.

As you progress through the book, you'll be building a site for a friend. Well, actually, not a friend, but a used car salesman. But by the time you finish this on-the-job training, the salesman will be your friend, and you'll know a heck of a lot of jQuery. As your friend the used car salesman would say, how can you turn down a deal like that?

Roughly the first half of the book teaches you the nuts and bolts of jQuery. The second half is like a candy store for website creators. You learn how easy it is, using jQuery and its add-ons, to easily install predefined custom themes, validate forms, create a date-picker, auto-complete like Google, improve on HTML buttons, create beautiful menus, quickly create web pages that are optimized for mobile devices, and more.

Forbes promises that "this book will change the way you write your web applications." It's definitely going to change the way I write mine.

Quick, simple, weak

This is an interesting but very weak intro to JQuery. By beginner I assume the author means to JQuery - you better have a full understanding of HTML5 & CSS3 if you want to use the book.

The examples are real and working code, but exceptionally trimmed of much beyond the specific item being demonstrated. And the demo's are pretty dull. The book could give someone with no exposure to any Java a quick intro to some of the things that can be done. You can read and pretty much test-drive the code in 1 to 1.5 days of light reading. (Positive note: While the book has a few typo's in the text it is one of the few where I don't see a single error in the code. That's a MUST for a beginners book!)

It's not a bad guide. It has a couple very useful links for real documentation (although a good link to the full JQuery API would add at least 1, possibly 1.5 stars to the rating). As it is the book provided me with nothing new other than a single link.

What Amazon does not tell you is that this book is (sometimes) available for FREE (and was when I placed my order). Kind of sorry I paid for it.

Authentic, Accurate and Dangerous

Goddess Cheyenne is, in one word, authentic. In a few more words, beautiful, demanding, cruel and absolutely professional. This book provides real and useful information for anyone interested in exploring the BDSM scene with a real mistress. Having had the honor to serve Goddess Cheyenne in person, i can attest to the accuracy of Her guidance. Be warned, Goddess is a wonderfully cruel Mistress and you should truly abandon hope if You get caught in Her web. But, i can assure you that you will succumb struggling but ecstatic.

Finally! Words can't even begin to express my love for this book, but I will do my best. First off, this book should be stored under self-improvement because that's what it did for me and will do for you. This is a must-have for all subs. I am certain it will become one of the top books for novice subs. Seriously. I have read so many books on BDSM, you name it, I've most likely read it... so trust me when I say, this is a must-have!

Even though this book seems to focus on Female Dom / male sub types, this book goes beyond orientation. I am a lesbian sub, not a novice sub but still exploring this part of me, and this book has done wonders as a guide. This book helps subs who want more than 'just play.' It caters to both curious & experienced. I am personally just recently realizing how big of a deal my submission is and it totally freaked me out. I used to live my life in a very go-with-the-flow manner in terms of love / relationships, until this part of me came to surface.

When I discovered submission, it was something that wasn't fluid for me. I really jumped into it head first because I felt like I had finally found my inner fire; that thing that was so real and right for me that everything else seemed gray. So it freaked me out to discover this part of me that felt so uncompromisable: My person had to be a Domme. So I needed to figure out who I am as a sub.

This book helped put me at ease that not only is it okay to feel this way, but that it's important to accept and embrace it for my own well being. When I saw that Chapter 1 is called, "Accept your submissive heart" I knew this book was a winner because let's be honest, that really IS the first step to meeting a real Mistress/Dominant. You have to know yourself, and be at peace with it, in order to attract the right one(s). I have read the first chapter numerous times and highlighted fantastic quotes. Just to give you a taste, this is one of my favorites, "Allow your submissive heart to revel in the joy of self-acknowledgment and self-love. Admit, even if only to yourself for now, who you are and accept yourself without judgment." Yep. This book is the real deal.

This price is a steal and there's a reason for that. Goddess Cheyenne purposefully priced it this way because she truly wants this information available to everyone. So do yourself a favor and buy yourself something that's cheaper than a latte but priceless to the soul... Explore, understand and accept your submissive self by getting this book, now.

A Labor of Love and A Gift To Submissive Men

I was fascinated to read Goddess Cheyenne’s new book “Yes Ma’am: A Submissive’s Guide To Meeting A Mistress”. Cheyenne is a well known professional dominatrix who is concerned that ne'er do wells posing as legitimate prodommes are exposing submissive clients to disappointment and even physical danger. Helping subs navigate the morass of marketing material on the Internet is only a part of the book’s purpose. “Yes Ma’am” is intended for newbie subs seeking to connect with a Mistress for the first time. Cheyenne touches on searching for a Mistress in the lifestyle scene as well as the pro scene. She advises aspiring slaves to; “stand out from the crowd with a first impression worth remembering” and reminds us that “proper behavior is paramount.”

Some of the points made in “Yes Ma’am” will be familiar to experienced submissives. (Do we really think it is proper etiquette to send penis pictures to prospective dominants?) Cheyenne makes it clear that she is speaking to neophytes who have not yet made peace with their own proclivities. She takes an interest in a sub’s mental and emotional state as evidenced by the simple meditation exercises discussed in the beginning of the book. I found it refreshing to read a book written by a professional dominant who seems to genuinely like submissive men. I realize we can be incredibly annoying sometimes.

Cheyenne stresses the importance of self acceptance and embracing our kink. She coaches subs to acknowledge the difference between fantasy and reality and maintain realistic expectations concerning D/s relationships. She advises us to be mentally prepared to surrender into submission and give serious thought to our interests and boundaries before doing so. Cheyenne encourages us to develop a “skill set of servitude” and a knowledge of basic submissive protocol before we begin our search for a Mistress.

Above all Goddess Cheyenne hopes her book will help submissives “learn to recognize fact from fiction in professional Femdom advertising as well as on blogs and boards in the community.” She warns aspiring subs to check facts carefully before making initial contact. She advises us to remain cognizant of truth in advertising as scams have become increasingly common in the Internet age. Here the book breaks new ground as Cheyenne takes us through the best methods for fact checking the websites of professional dominants. Even veteran scene players will find some valuable insights here.

“Yes Ma’am” is short sweet and to the point. Usually a slow reader, I easily finished the book in an afternoon. Cheyenne has set the price point very low so it can reach the maximum possible audience. “Yes Ma’am” is obviously a labor of love for her and a gift to the BDSM community.

I enjoyed reading "Yes Ma'am" and found myself wanting to hear more from Goddess Cheyenne. If you are considering seeing a professional dominatrix for the first time I highly recommend purchasing a copy.
