About the Author
Elvis C. Foster is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Keene State College, New Hampshire. He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science and Electronics, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science (specializing in strategic information systems and database systems) from University of the West Indies, Mona Jamaica.  Dr. Foster has over 25 years of combined experience as a software engineer, database expert, information technology executive and consultant, and computer science educator. He has had the favorable experience of being involved with the design and/or development of software systems for various medium-sized and large organizations, including the central bank of his own country. He has lectured at the tertiary level in three different countries, including the United States, where he now resides. He has produced many outstanding computer science and information technology professionals. Many of them have excelled at graduate school; others have gone straight to industry after their first degree; the thorough grounding acquired often serves them well, whether it be in leading software engineering enterprises around the world, or in other chosen vocations. His textbooks draw from that experience.

Software engineering as a discipline has been under attack for many years, both from the outside as the debate rages on as to whether or not we are truly engineers, and from the inside, as the cacophony of methods, tools, and languages that have burst onto the scene in recent years make standardization both difficult and fleeting. This latest book from Dr. Elvis C. Foster provides a road map to the fundamental principles of software engineering as a methodical discipline, as well as the various aids and techniques that are available.

Written in a conversational tone, the book guides the reader along a path of increasing awareness of what software engineering is, the context within which it exists, and the various skills, tools, and methods that are available or required for an effective undertaking in this discipline. The top-level divisions set clear expectations for the reader, and individual conversational chapters that follow allow for easy navigation by both professors and students.

About the Author
Robert Anemone is a biological anthropologist (Ph.D. 1988, University of Washington) with research interests in primate paleontology, growth and development and life history of hominoids, and functional anatomy of living and fossil prosimian primates. He has an active vertebrate paleontology research program in the Paleocene and Eocene of the Great Divide Basin in southwestern Wyoming, where he has been leading field crews since 1994. Before coming to Western Michigan University in 1998, he taught at Tulane University and at the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Save your money

I'm a little disappointed with this product. I expected to learn some basics of playing melodies with the keyboard, instead I wound up listening to some tunes played while I plunked the same cord repeatedly in time with the tune. I guess that's what they meant by playing the keyboard instantly. How the CD came into play with the book was a little confusing too. There should have been a better introduction as to how they correlated.

Good book for the basics and getting to know the first basic chords. Confusing as to why the right hand seems to form more chords than the left hand. Always thought the left hand did most of the chords in piano.

I did not like this book at all because it does not teach you anything. This book is way to basic. Even if you have never touched a keyboard in your life, you will use this book for 15 minutes, the time it takes to read it from the first to the last page...

About the Author
Robert L. Leahy, PhD, is Director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in New York and Clinical Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. His research focuses on individual differences in emotion regulation. Dr. Leahy is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Cognitive Therapy and is past president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy, and the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. He is the 2014 recipient of the Aaron T. Beck Award from the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Leahy has published numerous books, including, most recently, the coauthored volumes Treatment Plans and Interventions for Bulimia and Binge-Eating Disorder; Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders, Second Edition; and Emotion Regulation in Psychotherapy.

An important book that will be useful for clinicians of all theoretical orientations

This is an important book that will be useful for clinicians of all theoretical orientations. In recent years there has been a growing interest in emotion within the cognitive-behavioral world. Leahy’s unique contribution in this book is to explore the role of people’s thoughts about their emotions. Drawing on Beck’s concept of schemas as networks of beliefs, he demonstrates how maladaptive attitudes towards emotion leads to problematic coping strategies. This is an evidence-based model. After an impressive tour of shifting attitudes toward emotion throughout cultural history and philosophy, Leahy reviews research on emotion in the clinical and social psychological literature. He then describes his own research program, which finds that maladaptive beliefs about emotion correlate with anxiety, depression, personality disorders, substance abuse and marital dissatisfaction. His model provides an important link not only between first, second and third-wave CBT models, but also between CBT and psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches. As good as the theoretical chapters are, the book really begins to sing in the clinical section. Leah’s case examples are rich and complex, like the patients we see in real life, and he provides an impressive array of cognitive, behavioral, experiential and mindfulness-based interventions to modify patients beliefs about their emotions. As I read the book I found myself thinking about challenging cases of my own and how the emotional schema model could be helpful. I suspect this is a book I will refer to many times and I believe other clinicians will find it similarly helpful.

A wise and rich book that expertly integrates well-established models of human emotion with cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Emotional Schema Therapy provides an excellent explanation of “where the heart is” in cognitive-behavioral therapy. This book is rich, integrative, and erudite, drawing from established bio-evolutionary and psychosocial models to explain the role of emotions in people’s lives, and shows how a better understanding of emotions in therapy can empower patients that much more. Leahy explains that many evidence-based therapeutic procedures (such as exposure techniques for post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and avoidant personality disorder; and emotional self-regulation in DBT for borderline personality disorder) require patients to learn to tolerate emotional discomfort in the pursuit of greater self-efficacy and living a values-drive life. Emotional Schema Therapy does a great job in describing and illustrating how therapists help their patients to acknowledge, learn (and grow) from, and make peace with their emotions as part of a meaningful life. The clinical vignettes are highly informative and often touching. I greatly enjoyed Leahy’s use of philosophy through the ages to make many clinical points that are pertinent to evidence-based therapy in the present. This book will enrich anyone who reads it, whether they are a professional counselor or not.

An Evolutionary Force, Shaped by Rigorous Scholarship

Robert Leahy is a consummate scholar, not just of traditional Cognitive Therapy and Schema Therapy, but of social cognition in general and in particular metacognition. In this volume, Dr. Leahy shares the results of his research group's empirical investigations into the associations between metacognitive appraisals and emotional disorders, but with an exclusive focus on treatment interventions that target dysfunctional beliefs about emotions. Having witnessed Dr. Leahy present at the Metacognitive Conference in Manchester, UK, I can place Leahy's work solidly within the metacognitive tradition established there, but this volume is written using language and concepts that seem quite deliberately more familiar to Americans. In this way, Leahy has provided meta-therapy to American therapists; he is urging all of us to become more metacognitive in our work than ever imagined by traditional cognitive therapy or schema therapy, and by doing so, is contributing to the growth of our field, not to the fragmentation into meaningless branding. This volume will exert a strong evolutionary force on the future development of CBT worldwide.

Caelen and Fiona Have Only Two Chapters Together - What The Hey?

In my review on the first book in this series, Caelen's Wife: Book One - A Murmur of Providence (Clan McDunnah Series 1), I complained long and hard about Caelen McDunnah's persona being unrecognizable. In this book, we are reacquainted with our old Buddy Caelen and he's all that he should be. However, a huge problem for me was that he and Fiona had only two chapters together. That's right. They were together in the Prologue and Chapter 1, then had no contact with one another until the last chapter of the book.

I don't get it. Yes, there was continued setting up of the back story - that being yet another horrendous attack on a family of crofters, as Fiona and Caelen separately try to figure out who the villains are, but basically not much of a romance. Unless you want to consider Fiona pining away daily because she rejected Caelen's marriage proposal. That's not to say the story wasn't interesting, but I was looking forward to some romantic time with Caelen and Fiona.

Last, and this is spoilerish so don't read on if you don't want to learn something about Fiona's looks. Remember how Fiona was portrayed in Book #1 relative to her plain looks? It is now revealed that the "not-so-good-looking" comments have all been a scheme set up by her mother who persuaded the family to cooperate, so Fiona wouldn't grow up conceited and evil. Apparently, she grew up with the family continually casting doubts on her beauty. So, does she indeed have a broken nose, an overbite and somewhat stringy hair, or is she a tall, blonde, bonny lass? Who knows? Didn't they have mirrors in those days, or at least the possibility of a look-see in a clear river or lake? Perhaps we'll get a different story in Book #3. I just hope we have more of Caelen and Fiona togetherness.

Lest anyone reading my reviews on this series misunderstand - I'm a huge Suzan Tisdale fan. If you've ever read my reviews on some of her other books, it's evident by the 5 starred reviews I've given them. So far, however, this series has been a disappointment for this fan.

A Whisper of Fate, or Is It?

'A Whisper of Fate' is the second book in the McDunnah Series, and it picks up right where the first one left off. This second book begins with a kiss, and a giggle (from me) as Fiona declares, "Me womanly parts be broken!" You will have to read the book to see why.

Fiona has to make a choice, will she choose Caelen, or her clan. Caelen gets Fiona's answer when awakens and she is no where to be seen. He refuses to let go of the hope that she will so day be his wife. So he sets off to get a assistance from a neighboring clan in helping find out who is responsible for the raids, and deaths on Fiona's land.

This second book was full of action, a little bit of mystery and romance. I found myself laughing out loud in a few scenes. I enjoy a little humor with my romance! If you found yourself a little disappointed when the first in the series ended, this one will more than make up for that.

There are a few questions answered, and a few left unanswered. You will not be disappointed in the ending. I am looking forward to the third book in the series: A Breath of Promise, which will be out on March 24th. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys historical romance, and a wonderful story.

I did read before purchasing that this story came in three separate books, I didn't think it would matter. It did. If you are interested in buying these, I would suggest that you buy book 1 and book 3. Book 2 is BORING and you really don't need it for the story, waste of time and money. Book 1, A Murmur of Providence is incomplete, leaves you hanging in the air, book 3, A Breath of Promise, finishes the story. I don't mind buying a series of books, when each one stands on it's own and is complete. Never will I buy this type of incomplete stories again. The story line is okay, the characters are okay except the heroine is hot headed and jumps to conclusions. Didn't think she had enough 'smarts' to be chief of a clan.
