Enthralling

Someone told me that this, the second book about the psychologist Sebastian Bergman, is too complicated to enjoy. There are too many threads to follow, too many background stories, too much history which is only slowly revealed. The characterization, I found, was of the best. I managed to get into the characters, into the story, into the entire atmosphere of the work, within the first few pages and lost nothing of the whole throughout the entire book. Every single thread the authors created flowed smoothly together, let an impression on the mind, and was worked into the complete picture seemingly without effort. The storyline is believable, the characters realistic, the background stories almost a high-definition print of modern society.

Sebastian Bergman has fallen on hard times - as have many other fictional detectives or similar characters before him, but this is not a bad point here - devoured by his past, addicted to quick sex and one-night-stands, lost within self-pity and a failure to find personal gratification. He moves from one meaningless affair to the next, consumed with the memory of what could have been, what was and will probably never be again. And the vision of finding a family he does not have, which does not want him.

As a series of murders rocks Stockholm, he is drawn into a complicated game, an intrigue which cannot be linked to the perfect murderer, but which has all the markings of his work. A copycat murderer with a seemingly impossible skill to imitate the murders of a long-since imprisoned man, including actions only the murderer himself, and the small team which finally caught him, can possibly know. And Bergman, a very unwelcome character in the department, is an integral, unwilling part of the whole.

The language, the characters, the entire story flows effortlessly across the page, enticing the reader to think for themselves, to place themselves into the lives of Bergman and his team. The infighting, memories, and investigation allow readers the right level of frustration over the detection process, the lives of the characters themselves, to work themselves into the seemingly complex plot without the impression that they are losing themselves in a labyrinth of dead-ends, padding or wasted words. This is crime writing as it should be, deep and absorbing.

ASP 4.5 Genie teaching in a bottle, take a sip of real knowledge

The world of ASP website design has been a confusing and poorly supported with a hodge-podge of training books until now. This book is very well written and within a few hours of reading it I was able to incorporate solid understanding of ASP development into my thinking. The author knows how to teach this material in a manner that can make you an instant expert in a fraction of the time that you might expect.

I'm throwing away my previous books on ASP design because this book is so much better at teaching me the subject. I hope the author wrote other training methods that match my areas of interest.

NOTE: this is a very tall book that may not fit easily into your bookshelves. It should be placed on top of your book collection as a tribute to the excellent writing contained within.

Probably the best book I've bought on the subject . . .

I purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to create ASP.NET (web) applications. I've been doing Windows forms in .NET for about 10 years now but using a language that can be considered a dialect of C# (if interested, ASNA Visual RPG for .NET). While I had a fairly good handle on object oriented programming, there were constructs that I never really understood. Simon's book and teaching method have not only given be a good start on ASP.NET programming but also filled in the blanks in my knowledge of C#. I now have a much better understanding (as a grizzly old IBM programmer) of what constructors do and how to best employ custom classes. What you will see on the back cover of this book ("Why this book is different") is totally accurate. I only wish other books on IT subjects were written in the same style as Simon Smart has used. I f you want to learn C# and ASP.NET, this is an excellent (and possibly the only way) to start.

A very important part of any plan to master ASP.NET!

After Adobe decided to drop database support for Dreamweaver, I went looking for a replacement tool set to build interactive, database driven web sites. I decided it was time to jump into ASP.NET as my new tool and this book has been a huge help with the rather steep learning curve. The book includes a comprehensive review of ASP.NET 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012. I used Visual Studio 2013 Express for the Web which is a free download from Microsoft. All of the examples worked just as expected except for the chapter on site security. Microsoft dropped a very nice tool for managing site security, between VS 2012 and VS 2013 so I wasn't able to complete those examples in the book. There were a few minor differences between what the book told me to use and what I found in VS 2013 but those differences were minor and easy to overcome. I am presently working through the follow-on version of this book which is a set of "expert" skills. So far, that book appears every bit as useful as this one. This wasn't the first book on C# and Visual Studio that I've completed, but it is the first that I was able to work through all the way to the end. I highly recommend this book if you wish to learn about ASP.NET and Visual Studio... I consider it a vital stop on my way to mastering ASP.NET.

Hot read...but I wish....

I am a big fan of M.S. Parker and I have thoroughly enjoyed her books. I have enjoyed the two books of this series so far. But, I am somehow exhausted by the lying and the emotional cheating themes. Personally, they stopped lending the story the air of mystery it aimed for. What they do is expose Grabiella as weak and easily manipulated by her financial circumstances and by the expectations of the high-end society that comes with Edward. Her musings may come off as those of a strong, independent person but her decisions contradict the picture she tries to paint. To me, a strong person is one who tells the truth and faces the consequences. She's also quite naive in not recognising the responsibilities that come with being with Edward. She throws a tantrum when he ignores her at the party but so easily lets it go. She claims to love Edward but fantasises about Flynn and watches him drill another woman wishing it was her. What is the definition of love? Why do people continue to stay in relationships that demean then and claim it is love? If Edward doesn't accept her for who she is then she should be strong enough to cut the string and move on. He made her feel embarrassed about where she lives. Why? As hot as the books have been, I keep thinking that characters jump far too quickly into sex and their decisions are driven by it. I just want to read a book or a series with a truly tough, kickass, emotionally strong, mature, decisive, realistic, life smart and truly hot female protagonist with a male protagonist to suit. Perhaps the next series?

I enjoyed this next book on Edward and Gabriella and meeting Cody the gay brother and spending more quality time with Flynn. I kinda feel sorry for Gabriella; she is hiding behind her true feelings from Edward and not telling him the whole truth. She is able to be herself with his two brothers though. Edward seems to only be interested in business and having Gabriella as a fixture on his arm and at home.

"I don't know what drove me to do it. I was almost to the door when I found myself turning back to him, heart racing. I jutted my chin up. "I keep my clothes on." I can't say who was more surprised, him...or me."

"You wear a mask too, you know," he spoke while his back was to me. "You speak your mind around me, around Flynn...but around Edward, you hesitate. I bet you wouldn't have up and fired off what you said to me the first day we met. And I know you wouldn't have flipped him off like Flynn says you did to him."

"People don't wear masks because they like them. They wear them because they think they need them."

Gabriella wanted her fairytale, her happily ever after. Not quite what she's up against now. No what she has at the present time are future in-laws who believe she don't belong with their son or in their social circle. Gabby is faced with the danger of loosing everything that she's got going now. Her modeling job with Flynn McCreary the photographer, and step brother to her finance Edward Bouvier. Will secrets she holds be revealed? Will she loose the modeling gig, her friendship with Cody the other brother and her engagement to Edward? Or will the ladies man Fylnn give Gabs what she's longing for....as always M.S.Parker and Cassie Wild shine !!!

Political Magic

A delightful springboard for examining the relationships between political actors and the State. J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, both the books and the movies, are an au courant touchstone of the early 21st century and the millennial generation. Constructed as a political and social allegory it aptly reflects both our failings and our hopes. Barrat's examination of such issues as human (and non-human) rights covers slavery (house elves), racism (purebloods vs magical humans and the relationship of both to everyone else), strategies for activism (Hermione's SPEW), democratic deficits (the Minister of Magic, Fudge, appears to be unelected, though Harry becomes head of the DA by a show of hands), legitimacy of authority (Voldemort's use of power vs public acknowledgement of Dumbledore's wisdom), and the role of media (the Daily Prophet) in shaping public opinion.

Much of the provided analysis deals with legal principles, often violated, such as habeas corpus, the right to a speedy trial, whether one can be forced to testify against oneself, whether the ability to implant memories or use the undetectable imperious curse to force a person's action would make a mockery of the rules of evidence as it is undetectable, a problem that fortunately only applies to the world of witches and wizards. Another major topic is terrorism, and it is interesting to contrast and compare the actions of the Death Eaters with that of Dumbledore's Army.

The heavy emphasis on law and social issues does come at the expense of politics which could have been handled in more detail. The obvious link between the Death Eaters and the Nazis is made, and it was quite reasonable to connect Dumbledore to Plato's Philosopher King, even though there is no equivalent set of philosopher advisers to rule society – taken more fully the analogy does break down. IMV there were opportunities missed in not discussing the tribal politics of the different Houses (Slitherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Griffendor), Goblin capitalism (briefly mentioned), the rampant anarchism and libertarian nature of wizarding society, nor the formation of consensual networks. The Harry Potter saga could have may in future be used to examine all sorts of political developments ranging from the coalescence of Germany to the French Reign of Terror to the original union of the 4 houses representing either the Continental Congress or the creation of the Magna Carta.

Which doesn't mean that it wasn't a fun and interesting book! It was! 4.75/5*! Recommended!
