A great up to date introduction!

This is a really great introduction to Pennsylvania Dutch (Sometimes called Pennsylvania German) which is quite accessible in guiding the beginner to a good solid foundation in grammar and pronunciation with conversational practice that really reinforces what you learn.

You'd like some sound practice? Have no fear! Douglas Madenford has a video series on youtube titled PA Dutch 101 in which he gives a good foundation in some instruction that can truly add to what you're having to learn in the book.

The orthography which he uses to teach PA Deitsch is quite uniformed as compared to some other tutorials and dictionaries which have left me wondering what was in the book given that I had not grown up with PA Dutch and English is not my first language.

This book is a great up to date presentation which is sorely needed and I am hoping for more books and online videos to help in the presentation of this unique and wonderful language.

I was born and raised in Reading, now reside permanently in northern Germany. I find this book amusing and informative. I recall many words and phrases from my childhood days, I am making a serious effort to speak the language. Hope to visit Reading and Kutztown again soon.

As a German, I like this book. For learning, it is easy to understand for Americans, too. Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania German seems very similar to today's Swabian-Alemanic dialect. Generally, I love the Germanity abroad.

"Life's Not Always in Times New Roman" is captivating. It's clear from the start of the book that a whole lot of work went into bringing these stories to life. De León had to go out and get to know these people. He had to find out everything he could about the journey life had taken them on. They trusted him with their stories and he portrayed them in an incredible way. I don't read as much as I should, but I couldn't put this book down. The only time I did set it down was to take a breath and realize that it was all TRUE. No matter where you're at in life, you'll get something out of this. It's an all-purpose manual with parallels the most common situations people face growing up, and overall a great read.

Often the younger generations are underestimated in their ability to relate life experiences, but this book proves otherwise. I loved the great variety of relatable narratives and would recommend this book to my little sister, grandfather, neighbors, and everyone in between.

Buy It for Your Library

What it is: A great survey of German fighting knives.
What it is not: Comprehensive.
This book deserves a place on the shelf, if for no other reason than the clear color photographs of actual specimens. A nice bonus are period images of the knives being worn by German soldiers. The emphasis is on WWI, although WWII is covered, because there is a greater variety to show. In typical History & Collections fashion, there is broad coverage, but not too much depth. An exception is a chapter on the well known crank handle bayonet/knife, which should help collectors verify their example is authentic. There are other books out there on the subject, but I feel this is the best one to date.

Good basic text on the subject

I didn't know much about German military combat knives, and this book gave me the basic info I was looking for. You should know that this book covers only the issue, field type combat knives, not the Nazi daggers that are popular collectables.

This writer has given us an excellent reference for the study and identification of German combat knives (nahkamphmessers)from WWI and WWII that I have ever seen; a real contribution to this field.
