Works discussed in this book include Phillis Wheatley's Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773), Quobna Ottobah Cugoano's Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery (1787), Olaudah Equiano's The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano (1795), Elizabeth Hart Thwaites's "History of Methodism" (1804), Anne Hart Gilbert's "History of Methodism" (1804), and Mary Prince's The History of Mary Prince: A West Indian Slave, Related By Herself (1831). Analyzing these writings in the context of the black Atlantic struggle for freedom, The Trickster Comes West relocates the beginnings of Pan-Africanism and suggests the strong influence of its theories of communal resistance, racial solidarity, and economic development on pioneering black narratives.

About the Author
Babacar M'Baye is an assistant professor of English and Pan-African studies at Kent State University. His work has appeared in the Journal of African Literature and Culture, the Journal of Pan-African Studies, New England Journal of History, and other publications.

Fascinating and excellent

This book is extremely well organized and well written. Fascinating subject matter, and researched in detail well enough that I was able to use this volume as a source in an academic paper. Thank you for that, Dr. M'Baye! :) My only possible quibble with this book is with the bibliography. I wish that the sources had been separated into primary and secondary sources so that I could more easily follow the research trail myself. But I have that complaint about MOST academic books I read. So. Well-researched, well-written, fascinating topic. If you're interested in the subject matter at all, this is a must-have volume!

The Trickster and the Black Atlantic

The importance of the Trickster in New World African literature is carefully analyzed in the early works of Black Atlantic authors. Phillis Wheatley used her understanding of the female myth in Senegambia to survive the ocean voyage that she describes in the poem "Ocean". The discussion of the Atlantic slave trade in the Black Atlantic authors' work illustrates the author's grasp of the complexity of capitalism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
