Just an Avenue to Distribute Freeware w/Printed Book.

Ok, I bought it thinking it would be a good user manual. It is just a 3/8" thick overview of the freeware version with a distribution CD. Waste of money. You can print out the manual and download the package online.

It gets the job done

I had wanted to learn to use Eagle to create PC boards for a long time, but never quite got around to finding a suitable tutorial and slogging through it. I was excited to see the publication announcement for this book, decided to give it a try, and I'm reasonably glad that I did.

In general, the book is readable and appropriate to the task of familiarizing the reader with the basic operation of Eagle - both for creating schematics and for creating associated PC boards. The text is informative and mostly well organized and the illustrations are plentiful and mostly useful. While there were occasional parts of the text that were confusing, with some of the descriptions not completely matching the actual behavior of the software (the 'lite' edition of which was conveniently included on the accompanying CD, for Windows, Mac and Linux), and despite some of the English language constructs being a bit odd ('to action' an on-screen button, for example), and while the book would have greatly benefited if the publisher had done a bit more proofreading prior to publication, and while it would have been nice if they had included an index, my overall assessment is that the book adequately prepared me to start using Eagle on my own. I could hardly have asked for more.

One of the 2 books you need to learn CadSoft's Eagle

So here's the deal. I've been a circuit designer for the better part of 20+ years. I was an OrCAD person until it was bought and became too expensive for home/hobby use. I wanted something which was supported, professional, and didn't cost a fortune to use. Eagle fit the bill. It has it's shortcomings in terms of features, but it is very powerful and can be used for professional circuit board layout. Having said that, you need documentation allowing one to learn the software and also use as a reference. Unfortunately to date, no one book fits the bill. There is a tremendous amount of information on YouTube regarding Eagle, but sometimes you just want a book. This books, Eagle V6 by Mitchel Duncan is OK. It has all the information you need, does an excellent job explaining the PCB fabrication process and also the DRC features of the program, but it is a very dry and technical read. It is organized more as a reference manual, and it is useful for that purpose. This book, by itself, is not a very good tutorial. I came across Simon Monk's book, "Make Your Own PCBs with Eagle", and it is an easy read and can be used as a tutorial. It's not as complete, technically, as "Eagle V6", but does a good job explaining how to use the program to make the circuit boards you want. As such, I use both of these books all the time when I'm creating a schematic and layout. Together, these two books, in my opinion, are all you need to learn and use Eagle.
