About the Author
Stephen Mateo is originally from Toronto, Canada. He began his career as an actor, over twenty years ago, studying in Los Angeles. Stephen's acting career has been grounded in television and theater, landing co- starring roles on various sitcoms, and appearing Off-Broadway in the hit The Crumple Zone both in New York and Los Angeles. It was soon after that, that he decided to take hold of his career and began writing. Stephen wanted to write material that meant something to him, in a very personal way. In hopes that the stories would resonate with others, and encourage them to think about their own lives. He likes to develop characters that people relate to, or at least, can emotionally invest them selves in. Stephen's first attempt at this was a full-length screenplay titled, Dear John. Two things inspired him to write Dear John. First, he wanted to tell a story of love, to show people that the experience of finding love is no different, no matter whom you are. The second was freedom-the freedom to make our own decisions. Then Stephen decided to tell the story of Journey. Journey is a story of the lengths one will go to in search for freedom: the simultaneous desire to find our own place in the world, and the guilt we feel over separating ourselves from our family. I want to say to anyone who is reading this book is, "never give up on your dreams". This book is living proof that dreams do come true, not only for me the Author, but also for Tomas Castellano, the main character in this story. And if it weren't for his courage . . . there would be no JOURNEY.

Jouney - an amazing story!

I purchased this book not expecting a lot from it - new writer, first book. How good could it be - I thought. Let me tell you that I was unequivocally, 100% wrong!! Once I started reading, the story reached out, tugged at my heartstrings & wouldn't let go until I finished it. What an amazing, wonderful story! It made me cry several times & if I can say that about a book, it is awesome indeed.
Based on the life of Stephen Mateo's father, we are led from his childhood in the Canary Islands to the present day in the U.S. & Canada. Something his family was never aware of until the night before his 50th Wedding Anniversary. His journey shows his courage, his fortitude & his love of family but those are just words.
Do yourself a favor & buy this book - you can't go wrong & you won't be sorry. I'm so glad I went on this Journey!

Terrific Story

I thought "Journey" was a great summer read and have recommended it to others. Stephen Mateo's father gave him the gift of a wonderful, heartfelt and nail-biting true story that Stephen rendered beautifully on the page. I was impressed with the way Stephen evoked the Canary Islands and a time and place that was so specific to his father's own journey. I didn't know as much as I thought I knew about Franco's rule, and this book did a great job of filling in the blanks. Too, the pace of the book was great as I read from chapter to chapter and marveled at the travails his father went through as he left his family for a new life. I am so glad I read the book and can't wait for the movie version to be produced. Bravo, Stephen!

A wonderful Journey

Journey is a phenomenal adventure about a boy and his escape from the tyranny of the Francisco Franco dictatorship of the Canary Islands in the 1940's. The story also dives into issues of family, friendship, romance, and immigration. What I loved the most about Journey was how incredibly visual the story was. While reading it, I was able to see the tale unfold, as if a movie was playing in my mind. It was an easy read, and once I started, I was not able to put it down from cover to cover, reading the book in its entirety in just over 3 ½ hours. I HIGHLY recommend Journey for anyone who loves a good adventure story. I really loved it!
